[EN] This article makes an approach to the symbolic recovery as the fundamental argument used in the revised edition of Learning from Las Vegas (Venturi, Scott Brown & Izenour, 1977), a text which had with important repercussions on counter-modernist architectural theory. This recovery, extremely critical with the vulgarised imposition of the functionalism of the international style, coincides with the North American Neo-avantgarde’s rejection of the formalist academicism of abstract expressionism, as well as with the crisis of the concept of modernity, caused by what was conceptualised, not without certain confusion, as post-modern thought.

Interdisciplinariedad y territorios para la investigación en arte(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2014-12-29) Méndez Llopis, Carles; Dpto. de Dibujo; Facultad de Bellas Artes; Centro de Investigación Arte y Entorno[EN] Interdisciplinarity in art is presented as a form of relationship between fields of knowledge, able to admit the idea of Atlas and the continued migration of concepts and their interaction, to investigate and represent the world, between and beyond their limits. From the contemporary intellectual and paradigmatic change, that requires the abandonment of old principles based on the orthodox scientific bias and verification methods for the acquisition of knowledge, I locate the artistic practices and their spatialization as forms of acquisition / generation of knowledge, in/from that interdisciplinarity. Transit agent between territories and possessions, Without specific location, which serves as a trasversal activator of knowledge. [EN] The self shot, defined as a self-portrait photographed with a digital device for its subsequent (or instantaneous) voluntary or involuntary publication on the web, and its different typologies, such as the selfie or the mirror pic, is by no means an isolated event. Every day, thousands of photographs are produced and published around the world, adhering to the premises and rules that the phenomenon itself dictates: photographs subject to compositional, aesthetic and formal norms that end with anoverwhelming amount of imagery of self-represented bodies and faces. However, its origin was not so mainstream. In contrast, it was the result of anexperimental and intimate creation tied to adolescent authors.Currently, these types of images have become cultural by nature, advancing the photographic medium s unique evolutionary transformation and even serving, with its marked iconicity, as a framework of reference for various representations in other areas: art, advertising or, as we will see in this article, the physical book.

LCI[EN] The interdisciplinary research project entitled Environmental humanities. Strategies for ecological empathy and the transition towards sustainable societies investigates the role of ethics, visual arts and literature in the transformation process needed toimplement more eco-compatible cultural models. The ecological and social crisis we face forces us to rethink ourselves as human beings and as a society. Despite the significant techno-scientific advances in the field of energy efficiency and ecosystem restoration, a change in our world view and collective imagination is necessary in order to balance the powerful cultural inertia that characterizes the current paradigm. In this sense, humanities can play a relevant role in forging new values and imagining other forms of social coexistence. This paper analyzes some of the activities presented at the first international seminar carried out at the Polytechnic University of Valencia in November 2016 within the aforementioned research project. Different research methods in the field of humanities are taken into consideration to address the global and local dimension of the transition to sustainability. Firstly, an interdisciplinary approach is proposed for the study of global phenomena such as the energy and climate crisis. Moreover, creative workshops connected to citizen ecological initiatives are implemented to link academic research to local knowledge. Finally, we evaluate the influence and transformative potential of art projects exploring an expanded notionof site specific and adopting collaborative creation processes in dialogue with human communities, biotic and abiotic elements of the ecosystem.

- PublicationEstrategias culturales frente a la crisis ecosocial. Creación audiovisual y participación local en el proyecto Inner Nature Exhibition(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2018-02-13) López de Frutos, Estela; Rodríguez Mattalía, Lorena; Sgaramella, Chiara; Dpto. de Escultura; Dpto. de Pintura; Facultad de Bellas Artes; Centro de Investigación Arte y Entorno; Grupo de Laboratorio de Creaciones Intermedia. LCI[EN] INNER NATURE EXHIBITION is a non-profit cultural project that aims to propose a reflection on the eco-social crisis. It is a travelling video art show that interacts with other proposals organized by the different cultural centers that host it at national and international level, generating spaces of encounter, exchange and reflection. In its third edition, the project tries new formulas for relating local contexts to global problems. We urgently need cultural tools to make the ecological crisis visible and to deconstruct the dominant discourses that legitimize an unsustainable system. Issues such as peak-oil or climate change indicate the possibility of an unprecedented eco-social collapse. That is why it is essential to build alternative ways of working in the local contexts to rethink our sense of the common and to simultaneously cooperate with international institutions that can seek answers to shared problems. In this context, we explore the potential of video art as a tool to create awareness, while maintaining a critical viewpoint on the most technophilic discourses that tend to forget that technologies too are dependent on ecosystems. The experience of INNER NATURE EXHIBITION serves as a case study to analyze in practice the main contributions and possible limits of this type of cultural initiatives.
[EN] The relationship between the cinematographic image and the off-screen has been close and full of possibilities since the birth of cinema. In painting, however, this relationship is much more complicated, showing a large amount of limitations. This paper is intended to study and defend the existence of a pictorial off-screen. To prove this theory, we have selected two paintings of the Sienese painter Sassetta. His work, close to the International Gothic style and the Renaissance one as well, stablishes a close relationship with the space beyond the limits of the picture. This way, Sassetta s work has become a key element in a context where the calls to this non-seen space were especially rare. A brief study of the off-screen in Quattrocento painting will help us realize the importance of Sassetta s work. Thus, we intend to defend, as done by Jacques Aumont or Pascal Bonitzer, the existence of an off-screen purely pictorial.

[EN] The relationship between cinema and painting has been always very close, especially during the Early Cinema. Although this relationship provided the cinema a visual language, this heritage soon started to put limits to all the possibilities of this new art, unable to break up with the frontality of the inherited pictorial frame. The liberation process was slow and difficult and although the first attempts of breaking this frontality appeared early, the spectator s acceptance of these new modes of representation didn t appear easily. Filmmakers were forced to find ways to explore the possibilities of cinema avoiding the audience s rejection. The close-ups introduced for the first time during this first cinema s period were obligated to find excuses that could justify this unusual camera approach. This way, the early close-ups were born almost exclusively in scenes were the characters were using an optic device that could justify the break of the usual long shot. In this article, We will study the first uses of the close-up in Early Cinema and how they helped to build a cinematographic space with a language of his own.
