- Publication3D modeling of the Mosteirinho de São Francisco in Paudalho (Brasil) for an adaptive reuse proposal(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2022-06-30) Rolim, Renan C.V.S.; Gilabert Sansalvador, Laura; Viñals Blasco, Mª José; Dpto. de Ingeniería Cartográfica Geodesia y Fotogrametría; Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura; Dpto. de Composición Arquitectónica; Escuela Politécnica Superior de Alcoy; Centro de Investigación en Arquitectura, Patrimonio y Gestion para el desarrollo Sostenible[EN] The Mosteirinho de São Francisco was built around 1635, in a period when the Dutch dominated the northeast of Brazil. It is a building of simple architecture but representative of this singular historical context. It was declared as national heritage in 1966, but today it is abandoned, in an advanced state of degradation, and involved in a judicial process regarding its property. This paper presents the main results of the architectural and conservation studies on the building, as well as the methodology to create a 3D model of its current state as a basis for designing an adaptive reuse proposal that seeks to rescue its heritage values.
- PublicationAlgunas reflexiones sobre el Análisis Estratigráfico Murario(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2000-12-14) Mileto, Camilla; Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura; Dpto. de Composición Arquitectónica; Centro de Investigación en Arquitectura, Patrimonio y Gestion para el desarrollo Sostenible[EN] Stratigraphy applied to the study of architectonic heritage has become a really useful tool for analysis, if not to understand the evolution of constructed fabric perfectly well, at least to know and respect each of the interventions that make up the monument as we see it today. This article presents a view of the fundamental elements connected with wall stratigraphy and illustrates them with different examples of studies performed on some historic buildings.
[EN] The fortified masías of Teruel's Maestrazgo make up a heritage set of scattered implantation of great interest, with a high degree of authenticity, but little studied. Its status of ambiguous legal protection, a consequence of the generic protection modality with which Spanish legislation protects defensive architecture, and its lack of use place it at risk, and the first step for its revaluation and conservation goes through its knowledge and divulgation. That is why this work focuses on the architectural analysis of this complex through three complementary graphic strategies: a Geographic Information System GIS , an eminently graphic catalog and the architectural survey through the combination of terrestrial photogrammetry and the system traditional manual. A methodology that, adapted to the material means available, has proven to be very appropriate for a heritage of this nature.
- PublicationArchitecture in the heights: the forays of Alejandro de la Sota into the world of aeronautics(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2024-04-30) Pascual Rubio, Ana; Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura; Dpto. de Composición Arquitectónica[EN] Alejandro de la Sota is a key figure in 20th-century Spanish architecture. Within his professional career, the result of a tenacious personal search, we can glimpse a decisive factor, the transfer of knowledge from other more advanced fields of technology, stemming from his experience of the aeronautical sector. Based on this, he developed a profound admiration for the problem-solving methods of technology and engineering, focusing on the search for universal solutions through anonymous teamwork. Despite their importance, De la Sota s forays into the world of aeronautics have barely been researched. This article therefore aims to analyse the marked influence of these forays on the way in which De la Sota understood architecture and approached the development of his projects. In view of this, an initial study carried out on the architect s connection to the aeronautics sector is followed by a chronological analysis of his projects, and finally, by the conclusions on how this may have impacted the evolution of his trajectory.

- PublicationLA BÓVEDA DE CRUCERÍA ANERVADA DEL PORTAL DE QUART DE VALENCIA(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2012-06-30) Natividad Vivó, Pau; Calvo Lopez, Jose; Muñoz Cosme, Gaspar; Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura; Dpto. de Composición Arquitectónica; Centro de Investigación en Arquitectura, Patrimonio y Gestion para el desarrollo Sostenible[EN] The central part of the Portal de Quart, one of two surviving gates of the Mediaeval city walls of Valencia, includes a skew ribbed vault, placed over the central tribune, that eschews, for the first time in Hispanic Gothic, the usual solutions based on ribs and severies, using instead only whole ashlars. Such choice poses a number of new geometric problems connected with the design and execution of the vault, which are closer to Renaissance stereotomy than Gothic stonecutting. All this makes the vault a member of outstanding importance for Iberian Construction History. In our paper we present a precise photogrammetrical survey of this vault and, building on it, a study of its geometrical form and construction.
- PublicationBurial architecture. 3D dissemination study for a selection of Byzantine graves(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-01-19) Mileto, Camilla; Vegas López-Manzanares, Fernando; Cristini, Valentina; Cabezos Bernal, Pedro Manuel; Dpto. de Expresión Gráfica Arquitectónica; Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura; Dpto. de Composición Arquitectónica; Centro de Investigación en Arquitectura, Patrimonio y Gestion para el desarrollo Sostenible[EN] The former polis of Tall-as-Sin (in the current province of Deir ez-Zor, Syria) grew considerably during Justinian's reign in the 6th century AD. Its cemetery, outside the walls, presents an extraordinary Byzantine necropolis, where 163 hypogea graves were documented, thanks to recent archaeological campaigns financed by the Ministry of Culture (PAMES-Sirio Euphrates Middle Archaeological Project). This paper presents the research for obtaining three-dimensional (3D) models of graves, selected in the cemetery, by combining information (obtained from planimetric and photographic surveys of the site) with taxonomic features (types of arcosolia, vaults, accesses, stairways...). The 3D modelling process is carried out using data collected during the survey of the graves. These data are then used to restore the surfaces which cover the burial chambers dug out in the ground. The modelling technique was based on generating surfaces, incorporating the different sections and profiles obtained during the data collection phase. The surfaces generated enclose the volume of the dug-out space so that the definitive grave models were obtained using a simple Boolean operation, removing these volumes from a prism-shaped piece representing a portion of the land, thus emptying the interior. The result has provided a reliable and rigorous graphic basis for the design and printing of 3D mockups, contributing to the dissemination of the exhibition called "A retrospective on five years of archaeological activities in Syria".Highlights:Contributing to Byzantine architecture classification in the Middle East, including specific case-studies, interesting both from archaeological and architectural research fields.Experimenting and investigating tools for the study, representation and conservation of archaeological finds, combining 3D digital and 3D printing mockups.Incorporating resources for promoting and disseminating archaeological and architectural heritage, raising awareness among local Syrian population and authorities, allowing them to rediscover their own heritage, often neglected.
[EN] Under the premise of transforming society through educational policy, the Franco regime implemented a socio-educational program for working-class youth starting in 1955. This program aimed to boost the national economy by providing better qualifications for the workforce to support the emerging industry. In this context, the Cheste Worker University was created between 1967 and 1969, accommodating more than 5,000 residents, all of whom were adolescents aged between 11 and 14, coming from all over Spain. Residency at the educational complex was in a boarding school regime, where daily activities were carried out simultaneously and in sync. Architect Fernando Moreno Barberá tackled the design of the educational complex with design principles that addressed social conditions anticipated by sociological studies, such as reduction of overcrowding, seeking empathy with the students to ensure their well-being and the smooth operation of the complex. This contribution explores the influence of the user in the sensitive design of Fernando Moreno Barberá at the Cheste Worker University in all its scales: the layout, architecture, interior and graphic design, and furniture, all of which always place the young students at the center of the design considerations.
[EN] Architecture conceived as the superposition of historic contributions and safeguard of the traces and fragments of memory has a unique, irreproducible character in its matter and messages that must be respected by the architect. Now that the concept of restoration as functional, mechanical or typological repairs to the building and the need to correct, amend or formally improve the monument from a contemporary viewpoint has been transcended and a really respectful symbiosis of contemporary methodology has been achieved, the time has come for a sensitive approach, half-way between reason and sentiment, making it possible to minimise the impact of the restoration works on the character and sensitive experience of architecture.
- PublicationConstrucción de nueva planta en entornos rurales protegidos: el caso de Albarracín (España)(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2018-12-19) Baró Zarzo, José Luis; de Haro Muñoz, Miguel Ángel; Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura; Dpto. de Composición Arquitectónica; Grupo de Investigación en Arte y Arquitectura Contemporánea[EN] The small size of rural settlements, closely connected to the landscape, the constructive homogeneity of their architecture, their resilient tradition safeguarded by locals, and other singularities highlighted in protected settings suggest the need for a specific debate when intervening to bridge the voids which have appeared. This article aims to navigate this by examining interventions in the historic center of Albarracín (Teruel, Spain). Firstly, an assessment is carried out on the suitability or inconvenience of reconstructing on sites with limited past remains. Secondly, the way in which this void can be remedied is examined, between the need to be integrated to prevent distortions and the will to differ from this setting in order to prevent historical falsifications.

The research has opened an interesting horizon about the relations between territory, towers and historical paths, visible in the district during the Reconquest Ages. In conclusion, use of territorial models for archaeological research.
[EN] The Ise Shrine in Japan is made up of a group of 109 shrines with primitive forms that are destroyed and rebuilt on an adjacent site every twenty years. There are records that this curious phenomenon related with Shintoist animism has been taking place at least since the 8th century. This article strives to reveal the meaning underlying this process, discover the possible implications and consequences of this strange unbuilding and rebuilding practice in restoration in Japan and the West and explain the reasons for the fascination exerted by the humble forms of this shrine on leading members of the Modern Movement.
