- PublicationCartographic coordination method in urban form studies. The case of the Avenida del Puerto, Valencia(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2019-11-18) Temes Cordovez, Rafael Ramón; Dpto. de Urbanismo; Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura[EN] Studies on the evolution of the urban form frequently use methods of analysis in which rigorous and precise graphic representation is revealed as an optimum means in the research process for measuring, comparing and assessing the changes and transformations experienced. The purpose of this research, using the Avenida del Puerto in Valencia as a study model, is to demonstrate the validity of the cartographic coordination method, verifying relationships between the redrawn cartographs of different periods and taking permanences or invariants as support points that ensure comparison throughout the study sequence. It also intends to underline the potential offered by Geographic Information Systems in urban evolution studies, for which the spatial component constitutes a fundamental data. The analysis begins in the 18th century, to focus in greater detail between 1944 and 2004.
[EN] Kathryn Gustafson is an internationally recognized landscape architect. Intially trained in art and fashion design, she later studied landscape architecture at the École de Paysage de Versailles in France. Here she developed her early work in this country, exemplified by the magical Les Jardins de l ́Immaginaire. She is presently engaged in landscape practice through two two different practices: Gustafson Porter, based in London, and Gustafson Guthrie Nicol, based in Seattle. Workin with her colleagues at these firms, relevant works include Westergasfabriek Cultural Park in Amsterdam, the Lurie Garden at the Millenium Park in Chicago, the Princess Diana Memorial in Hyde Park, the first ever landscape installation at the 11th Architecture Biennale in Venice and the winning design of Unified Ground: Union Square for the National Mall Competition in Washington, DC.Kathryn Gustafson ́s work has been widely published internationally and has obtained an astonishing number of awards and recognitions. For her significant contribution to architecture and art, she was the first landscape architect to be awarded the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2012. In 2014 she won the Obayashi Prize, and in 2015 she received an honorary doctorate from the Polytechnic University of Valencia in Spain.Kathryn Gustafson has always had a personal voice in contemporary landscape architecture, which remains relevant, innovative and meaningful. This voice stands out for the way it deals terrain modeling in her projects. This sculptural and sensual modeling can be seen in the Central Park Valencia, a project that is the result of an international competition in which Gustafson Porter, along with Nova, Grupotec Engineering and Borgos Pieper architects, won the first prize, supported by widespread acclaim for her proposal.
- Publicationhipo_TESIS_Vlc. Valencia, ciudad imaginada(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2023-11-30) Temes Cordovez, Rafael Ramón; Pérez Igualada, Javier; Portalés Mañanós, Ana María; Palomares Figueres, María Teresa; Llop Torne, Carles; Dpto. de Urbanismo; Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura[EN] "hipo_TESIS_Vlc" is a choreographic exercise that visualises, using the collage technique, the imagined, planned and projected city of Valencia over the last 50 years. This work is part of the research project "Las ciudades y sus tesis. A historiographic and analytical repository of theses on Iberian cities 1970-2020" with a triple objective: to have a standard register of theses focused on urban studies of Iberian cities; to have a disciplinary and historiographic overview of the cities based on the theses produced and to have a comparative vision. The fragmentary vision of "urban scraps" offered by the "hipo_TESIS_Vlc" panel, then joined and woven together utilising a collage, represents a method of analysis and reflection that offers ideas that could be extrapolated to the urban studies of other cities. The main conclusions of the work focus on affirming that: the city, as a set of theses in recomposition, is a field of research to deepen a renewed vision of urban studies; the theses of cities constitute a record of the key references for the construction of their urban historiography and to recompose their past, often forgotten or invisibilised.

[EN] In this paper we propose a typology of patterns –or composition systems– for the morphological definition of horizontal surfaces in landscape design. Specifically, we state that the basic ways to define such horizontal surfaces in landscape design fit four possible composition systems or organizational patterns, which we will call Carpets, Paths, Mosaics and Strata. After identifying the characteristic and differential features of each of these patterns, which we will validate by contrasting them with exemplary works taken from historical and contemporary landscape architecture.
