- PublicationMuseo Paula Rêgo, Cascais. Portugal(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2012-12-18) Eduardo Souto de Moura, Arquitecto[EN] Visionary architects drew on Utopian proposals for new types of buildings and so, in the style of Boullée in the Cenotaph pyramidal, Souto de Moura designed his fi rst art gallery in the form of a treasure chest.Picturesquely situated, the landscape architecture of the museum is framed by a botanical fi lter defi ned by a carpet of greenery and clouds of trees that cast shadows on the built volume. The building is inserted into the architect’s career, in a reunion stage with his training origins which are identifi ed by his courtyard houses and thereby resolving the key domestic program.Immersed in the technological spirit, Souto de Moura converts a pigmented concrete architecture into an apparent mud wall construction of that takes on the character of vernacular architecture. The trace of the wooden formwork molds the tectonics of the museum.
- PublicationCasa Fosc. San Pedro, Chile(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2012-12-18) Mauricio Pezo, Sofi a von Ellrichshausen, Arquitectos[EN] This project is both an exercise of formal and structural concentration. The dense program of this house for a family with four children (fi ve bedrooms, three bathrooms, family room, studio, etc) is fi tted between a regular interior duct and the surface of the largest legally possible exterior wall. The decision of concentrating the entire program in a three storey prism on the highest point of the land so as to have vistas beyond the trees located on the lowest area of the plot. Bedrooms occupy the fi rst and third fl oors. The intermediate stage, a podium leveled with the natural access to the site, is occupied by the social and gathering activities.
- PublicationLa embajada de Holanda en Adís Abeba. Etiopía(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2012-12-18) Dick van Gameren Arquitectos; Blanco Agüeira, Silvia[EN] Since the art of colouring concrete started to spread, this resource has become a catalyst for architecture built with this material. In the Dutch Embassy in Ethiopia, the simplicity of lines that dominates the composition is surrounded by colour superiority, due to the various infl ections of an intense tone and the contrast with its surroundings. The authors subjected the entire surface to the rule of colour, despite also opting for asymmetry and the plastic relationship with history, specifi ed in the evocation of ancient Ethiopian building drilled into the rock.
- PublicationFifty by fifty feet house. Casa Ritter-Gey. Odiosas comparaciones(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2012-12-18) Díaz Segura, Alfonso[EN] The Won haus Ritter-Gey of Bearth & Deplazes in Eschen (Liechtenstein) is an example of formal and constructive rigor that is usual in this Swiss architectural team. But what stands out is its conceptual proximity with 50x50 feet house of Mies van der Rohe and commissioning crisis of that essential proposal when the leap to reality. There are obvious similarities in the two houses that deal of formal control or the dialog of the pillars with the glass membrane. Similarly, the differences seem clear, as the change in material and volume. But essentially, both address timeless issues such as the relationship of technology with architecture and the establishment of a universal form ready to asume changes in the program.
- PublicationCentro de interpretación de las pinturas rupestres de la "Roca del moros" del Cogul, Lérida. España(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2012-12-18) Prudenci Español y José Ángel Hidalgo, Arquitectos[EN] The aim of “Roca dels Moros” interpretation centre in Cogul is to give to visitors the optimum conditions to appreciate its cave paintings. Architecture appears bare, rough, extreme and buried to offer us a series of crevice-like itineraries towards daylight, towards the Roca, drifting us apart from the contemporary bustle throughout the tour. The building is placed on a former quarry and it acts as gate and hinge to reach the paintings. From underground, we are led to an elementary space, almost a cave, strained by crevices and daylight wells. A concrete volume holds the basic functions of an interpretation centre while a zigzag path sets off from the building and leads to the Roca.
- PublicationBodega Pago de Carraovejas. Peñafiel, Valladolid. España(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2012-12-18) Fernando Zaparaín Hernández, Arquitecto[EN] This project is part of a series of works where we tried to look into a massiveness which liberated space and turned what isn’t done into the main focus. The whole building is articulated by this blank space in the shape of patios, subtractions or voids. Daylight is distributed through indirect and singular openings. Structure is resolved through big superfi cial components in the form of enclosure. This bearing mass accumulation gives some freedom on façade to arrange shades and transparencies of a singular plastic value. Concrete, in different tones, makes possible that wished continuity on which to open signifi cant voids.
- PublicationAuditorio y Escuela de música en Benejúzar. Alicante, España(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2012-12-18) Allepuz Pedreño, Angel[EN] The Auditorium- music school of Benejuzar- Alicante by architect Efigenio Giménez is a magnifi cent example of the intensive use of concrete as a structural material and as an enclosure used in situ or prefabricated pieces dealing with various fi nishes, layout and colour. The article is divided into four movements and is similar to that of a symphony and using the metaphor of chess to illustrate movements in space, stating the main ideas of the building referring to its internal order, technical and external conditions and a more personal interpretation of the building.
- PublicationGuardería "Les graines d'étoiles". La Duranne, Aix en Provence. Francia(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2012-12-18) Atelier Fernandez&Serres, Arquitectos[EN] Under the light of the ‘midi’, the painterly colors of the Provence are revealed here as a matter of choice of the spatial construction of a highly emotional program - a nursery. The site of Duranne is sensitive with large trees. It is talking about the environment of the plant world and the distant landscape. (La Sainte Victoire). One volume, cubist, yellow ocher matte signalize, in the middle of the Aix countryside, the presence of children. In the heart of an educational garden, the nursery “Les graines d’étoiles“
- Publication"Villa urbaine", Beaumont, Lausana. Suiza(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2012-12-18) Varios, Arquitectos[EN] The urban villa is situated at the top of the Campagne de Beaumont park, a country estate constructed in 1850.The compact building with its punctured window “holes” reinterprets characteristic qualities of the 19th century buildings. For example, the mineral washed concrete façade uses a colour that blends in with the surrounding vegetation. Since the concrete surfaces of each individual apartment are treated differently, the typologically interwoven character of the interior can also be perceived on the exterior.
- PublicationLa ciudad blanca; Madinat Al-Zahra(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2012-12-18) Sobejano, Enrique[EN] The relation between time and architecture becomes clear in the Madinat al-Zahra through the role played by materials and construction as the support of architectural form. The analogy with an archaeological site is the starting point of the project and it leads the process of conception, development and construction, where decisions regarding to spatiality, materiality and construction come up as a reflection on contemporary architecture, the ancient Arab city and the recovery of the archaeological remains.
- PublicationEl hormigón coloreado como integrador paisajístico de la arquitectura del vino(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2012-12-18) Salvador Luján, Nuria; Lizondo Sevilla, Laura; Dpto. de Proyectos Arquitectónicos; Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura; Grupo de Investigación en Arte y Arquitectura Contemporánea[EN] In recent decades, a strong link has been established between architecture and wine. The location of these buildings amid the vines makes its integration in the landscape an exercise of the utmost importance. It is a quest to establish a dialogue between artifacts and environment, where the use of coloured concrete is one of the resources that performs the best. This artifi cial stone, the concrete, gives architecture a more natural look, more stereotomic, capable of conveying a sense of belonging to the place. This article will address these issues through three Spanish wineries.
