- PublicationCanary Island tomato exports: A stable seasonal pattern?(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2002) Martín Rodríguez, Gloria; Cano Fernández, Víctor Javier; Cáceres Hernández, José Juan[EN] This paper studies the evolution of the weekly exports of Canary Island tomatoes after the entry of Spain in the European Union. A first analysis of deterministic components reveals their instability, clearly related to changes in the EU commercial regulations of access to European markets, and the presence of many outliers due to different reasons. These factors must be considered in the study of stochastic seasonality of the series. Furthermore, it is necessary to take into account the weekly frequency data and the existence of periods without exports in order to capture its behaviour and, in particular, the nature of its seasonal component.
- PublicationQuota hopping under the Common Fishing Policy(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2002) Domínguez Torreiro, Marcos; Freijeiro Álvarez, Ana. B.; Varela Lafuente, Manuel[EN] In this article the process of property internationalisation within the fishing sector of the European Union is analysed (in particular, the strategy kwon as quota hopping, as implemented by the Spanish fishing sector). During its development a conflit has arisen in relation with the defense of the national character of the quotas allocated by the Principle of Relative Stability. The implementation of restrictive measures, e.g. the requirement of “economic links” has changed the context where agents involved in the process of internationalisation make their decisions. In our article the different strategies are analysed and the outcomes are evaluated.
- PublicationOrganic produce: a study of consumer and specialist distributor preferences(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2002) Sánchez, Mercedes; Sanjuán, Ana I.; Gil Roig, José M.; Gracia, Azucena; Soler, Francisco[EN] Increasing concern about food security and environmental consevation might enhance demand for ecological food products. However, consumption has not kept pace with production. Higher prices than conventional food products, distribution deficiencies and lack of knowledge might explain it. The goal of this paper is to analyse those limitations in depth. To attain this objective, two surveys were addressed to consumers and distributors, in Pamplona. These are the two main actors in the agrofood chain involved in the future development of the organic market. Consumers have been segmented according to lifestyles and distributors according to their performance on business administration, in order to define the most interested groups in organic food. Then, conjoint analysis has been applied to identify the preferences structure of each segment. Finally market shares for organic food have been simulated under different scenarios.
- PublicationNitrate pollution control in irrigated agriculture(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2002) Martínez Martínez, Yolanda; Uku Karaj, Skender; Albiac Murillo, José[EN] This paper analyzes the effects of some water management policies and irrigation systems on crop yields and water pollution, in an area located in the Flumen- Monegros irrigation district in Huesca (Spain). The analysis is performed using water and nitrogen crop response functions, which are estimated with the EPIC crop growth package. The estimation of response for the crop activities incorporates information on local climate, soils, crop management and irrigation systems. The relationship between yields and water and nitrogen input use is examined, in order to quantify the pollution reduction cost faced by farmers. The costs depend on the particular crop and the pollution abatement measure, and information on these costs is important to design efficient pollution abatement measures.
- PublicationScale, productivity growth and risk response under uncertainty(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2002) Hranaiova, Jana; Stefanou, Spiro E.[EN] This study focuses on the analysis of the production behavior and risk preferences in the presence of output price uncertainty. Following a theoretical model based on the assumption of maximization of expected utility of profits, the approach used in this study infers information about risk preferences from the production characteristics of the farm. In addition, the nonparametric method of estimating elasticity of scale and technical change eliminates the need to impose a uniform production or cost functions on individual producers. The approach is applied to a panel of dairy farms, which are evaluated for their elasticity of scale and the total productivity growth components of their operations. Estimates of farmers' risk attitudes represented by individual marginal risk premiums are also related to socio-economic attributes of farmers. Overall, farm size plays an important role in explaining productivity and scale differences and has the most significant negative effect on marginal risk aversion. The magnitude of the impact of additions to the farm's dairy herd increases with scale of operations.
- PublicationDairy quotas in Spain: a structural analysis and comparison of management effects(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2002) Calcedo Ordóñez, Victoriano[EN] The structural change linked to the quota regime has had the same results as in other EC countries. The process is similar to the one in Germany or France. However, the pattern of quota management in Spain is closer to the flexible model in United Kingdom and The Netherlands. On the other hand, the quotas are shared out de facto amongst Autonomous Regions, as quota transactions between them are subject to strong administration limits. More than the separation between quota and land, the interests of Autonomous Regions have taken part as these consider their territory as a locked district, from which no quota can be left out in order to avoid any loss in their wealth.
- PublicationA multi-index extension of the beta agricultural evaluation method(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2002) Garcia Perez, Jose; Cruz Rambaud, Salvador[EN] The aim of this paper is the study and generalization of the method of the two distribution functions, used in the theory of valuation and, more concretely, in the agrarian valuations. The basic foundation of this method, proposed by Ballestero (1973), is the use of a representative index of the asset that we try to value and in the acceptance of a series of hypotheses on the distribution of the variable index and of the variable value of the asset. Until this moment and in all the works published on this method, the limitation of using a single index (although this is a synthesis of several to which it tries to represent) has remained. In this work it is presented a method that generalizes the previous one and that allows us to work with more than an index, so that it is possible not only to determine the value of an asset with reference to an index but to several ones. The method allows to work with different distribution functions of those used to treat the risk and it presents a test of acceptance of the functions used to model the indexes. Finally, a practical case is developed.
