[EN] The conquest of Seville in 1248 gave rise to the appearance of a border with the Moorish kingdom of Granada, known as the Moorish Strip, that was to survive for two and a half centuries. The defence of this border based a great part of its success on the geographical relief separating the valley of the Guadalquivir from eastern Andalusia, and was structured with bases in principal cities and a network of fortifications that covered a visually connected mesh of towers to guard against assault. Their construction and maintenance was the responsibility of the Council of Seville and the military orders. A methodology 1for analysis is established using surveys, photography, the materiality of the masonry and documentary research, to identify a common typology found in the towers constructed by the Council, with a “standard” design and structures which were innovative for that time
[EN] The difficulty presented in the execution of “domical vault” or “ quatre punts” timbrel vaults with diagonal brickwork is that of the marking out with cladding tiles in the layering of the first rows, when setting the pace of the construction and joins. The continuity of the joins is a sign of the good execution of the vault, resembling a translational surface made by the curved movement of the two parallel falsework systems. Experience in the execution of this complex procedure proves that faults and errors appear as the initial joins are lost and it is not possible to follow a specific geometry. A valid solution consists of approaching the vault as a toric surface, generated by the revolution of the generatrix arch taking the axis to be the vertical line perpendicular to the guide arch. The differences in proportion between the two surfaces are minimal, but with this second option the workman has more control over the marking out and execution, by using falsework systems that generate a repetitive sequence for the rows.
- PublicationApuntes urbanos.
[EN] Analysis of visual behaviour before a given stimulus is a tool for studying an observer’s most immediate, instinctive response. Recent access to technology able to locate and record the path the eye takes when observing a stimulus has led to growing interest in how we observe our environment. Studies which have simultaneously measured an observer’s subjective response and visual journey make it possible to establish a relationship between the way the image is observed and the observer’s visual attention to the image. This present paper describes an experimental study which applies this new technique for visual analysis to the observation of images used in recent architecture competitions. These measurement tools for measuring physiological responses can make a significant contribution to observer analysis.
- PublicationLa ciudad, esa obra de arte colectiva. Herramientas de expresión gráfica y de creación participativa en espacios urbanos(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-03-24) Sève, Bruno; Muxi Martínez, Zaida; Sega, Roberto; Redondo Domínguez, Ernesto; Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad[EN] Sustainable, democratic, resilient, inclusive urban regeneration means working with inhabitants when cities are transformed, giving them the opportunity to collaborate in the city’s creation. This research studies the relationship between graphic creativity and citizen participation for architectural and university applications in urban processes to build the city, and in the strategies and means to operate it. In schools, this relationship reveals glimpses of new ways of alternative learning. As a research method, we analyze examples that have influenced various graphic disciplines and technological implementations, and urban art practices that have emerged from citizen struggles. The results illustrate that the urban project can be taught by incorporating collaborative design, with strategies such as street art, collective maps or tactical urbanism, and urban sketching and virtual reality, taken together as means of enriching the creative, artistic and educational processes.

[EN] The continuing progress over the last years on three-dimensional surveying equipments –software and hardware– has increased the range of possibilities for the recording, documentation and dissemination of heritage. However, and based on this following hypotheses, there are yet several obstacles in the creation of photorealistic and reliable 3D models among some geometric and radiometric fields. These problems arise when the pieces offer difficulties for scanning such as the lack of defined edges in the geometry of the object in question and/or the impossibility of recording due to the type of finish (color, uniformity, reflectance...)This study suggests and presents results of a photorealistic model applied to the survey of the work of the sculptor Jorge Oteiza, whose pieces are characterized by geometries and textures against an ideal scanning. The solution contemplated here involves a methodology based on a combination of techniques: models captured by optical triangulation scanner Artec supported by the photogrammetric software PhotoScan in the texturing phase
[EN] In this paper we discuss an educational research case of study centered on the visualization and ubiquitous access to educational material on multimedia mobile devices. The object of the study is the urban development and improvement project and the design of new street market stalls in Tonalá, Jalisco, Mexico. The educational experiment was conducted in a course of the Master’s Degree in Graphical Processes at the University of Guadalajara. In its evaluation, BLA (Bipolar Laddering Assessment) qualitative surveys, originated in user experience studies, were used as complementary methodologies to the quantitative analysis. After its development, analysis and evaluation, the authors can conclude that these new interactive visualization strategies are proven to motivate students, despite the requirement of a greater dedication time as a result of their complexity and technological novelty
- PublicationEl espacio digital: comparativa de las últimas técnicas de visualización arquitectónica(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2017-11-21) Higuera-Trujillo, Juan Luis; López-Tarruella Maldonado, Juan; Llinares Millán, Carmen; Iñarra Abad, Susana; Dpto. de Expresión Gráfica Arquitectónica; Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura; Instituto Universitario de Investigación en Tecnología Centrada en el Ser Humano; Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad[EN] The great technological evolution of architectural rendering resources over the last few decades has opened up a new range of possibilities to visualise the non-built space. The spatial immersion systems, developed by the videogame industry, have entered in the sceptical area of architectural rendering, offering a series of undeniable advantages including enhancing the understanding of spaces to inexpert people. In order to study the benefits of these new virtual tools, an experimental study was carried out so as to compare the user response to technological and graphic supports. With a simple of 84 individuals, the obtained data reveal significant differences in the space perception depending on the format and support used to their representation. The results of this study allow us to reflect on new means of architectural rendering in the professional and teaching field.
[EN] During the first half of the 14th century, the council of Seville, supported by the Castilian monarchy and the local nobility, responded to the fear of a new invasion from North Africa by embarking on a defence programme that required unprecedented logistical efforts, far beyond the resources available at the time. This programme consisted in building a defensive system across the south of the territory, the so-called “Moorish strip”, which included at least 40 defensive towers and small fortifications situated in strategic, visually connected positions. Their aim was to neutralise the Nasrid raids in this border area. Very few of these towers remain intact today, most of them having fallen into an advanced state of decay or having disappeared completely. Since they were abandoned at the end of the Granada War, very little documentation has survived and in some cases all that we have today is a handful of drawings, engravings by travellers and postcards. However, the analysis of this graphic documentation is an efficient method for acquiring knowledge about this heritage.
[EN] The efficiency of building information models (BIM) for the management of architectural information calls for the development of heritage information modelling (HIM) as a specific application. Using the documentation required for the legal protection of a monument as our starting point, we have created a HIM for the Church of San Pedro in Arcos de la Frontera (Cádiz, Spain). The HIM not only provides the information outputs required for the administrative procedure but also reveals the obsolescence of this procedure and its own usefulness as an efficient tool for the comprehensive management of protected heritage
- PublicationGraphic resources for the GIS positioning and analysis of 20th-century fortification: bunkers in the vicinity of the rock of Gibraltar(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2020-11-17) Atanasio Guisado, Alberto; Arévalo Rodríguez, Federico; Molina Rozalem, Juan Francisco; Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad[EN] At the end of the Spanish Civil War, a fortification system was built along the northern shore of the Strait of Gibraltar. Its components include a network of bunkers to defend the coast, which is of enormous historical interest as another link in the evolutionary chain of fortification. However, in spite of institutional protection, the heritage value of these bunkers is still a subject of debate and today they remain ignored and abandoned to their fate. To raise awareness and contribute to the knowledge about these elements, we have devised a strategy based on the use of different graphic resources and documents discovered in military archives: georeferencing of the location and identification plans of the bunkers to draw up an inventory using geographic information systems; and an architectural analysis of the original floor plans and crosssections, as well as the creation of various 3D surveys.
- PublicationMás allá de la métrica. Las nubes de puntos como expresión gráfica semántica(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2017-11-21) Puche Fontanilles, Josep M.; Macias Solé, Josep M.; Toldrà Domingo, Josep M.; de Solà-Morales, Pau; Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad; Associació Catalana d'Universitats Públiques; Fundació Bancària Caixa d'Estalvis i Pensions de Barcelona[EN] Point clouds are objects with an unquestionable geometric value. However, the development of certain working methodologies allows the extraction of information that goes beyond the metric, allowing a semantic analysis of the documented object. In this work, we present one of these methodologies that allows, with the sole modification of the visualization of the point clouds, to highlighting the elements of semantic value in the scanned architectural object.
- PublicationThe two souls of Diego Siloé: an analytical approach to the church of la villa in Montefrio(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2020-11-17) Ampliato Briones, Antonio; Acosta Almeda, Eduardo; Agencia Estatal de Investigación; Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad[EN] This article examines the Renaissance church of La Villa in Montefrío, a milestone in the career of Diego Siloé, and presents an architectural analysis based on a new set of detailed plans. In this church, the complex topography of the hill and the changing urban reality are essential elements of the architecture. The audacious position of the building on the edge of the cliff and, even more notably, the dramatic protrusion of the apse and tower form part of an exercise in the control of distance, scale and movement, hallmarks of a mature Renaissance language. A homogeneous and unitary interior structure provides the basis for a series of formal strategies, culminating in a spatial duality that subtly transcends to the exterior. In this complex architecture created by Siloé, each compositional gesture operates simultaneously on several fronts, all combining to create a unified end result.
