- PublicationAgrarian landscape preferences study by Conjoint Analysis and Contingent Valuation methods(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2004) Sayadi, Samir; González Roa, Mª Carmen; Calatrava Requena, Javier[EN] Among the externalities produced by agrarian activities one must consider its contribution to the shaping of the landscape, an aesthetic externality value of the agrosystems. Recognizing and appraising this contribution is becoming more and more important every day. In this study a Conjoint Analysis and Contingent Valuation methods has been used to estimate, first the relative importance of the agrarian component level in the utility function achieved from enjoying landscapes, and secondly the Willingness To Pay of surveyed for these landscapes existing in the area of The Alpujarras (Granada-Spain). Data has been obtained by a questionnaire performed to a sample of a potential visitor of the area, using three main features of landscape, as follows: Vegetation layer, level of building, and mountain inclines, each of them with different levels. Subsequently, a multiple regression model has been fitted to identify the relationship between the Willingness to Pay for landscapes and its features and the socio-cultural traits of the individuals. According to results concerning both the preferences and the Willingness To Pay of visitors for landscapes, some conclusions have finally been drawn, allowing to derive strategies to maintain the most valued landscape in the area and to make use of it for the sustainable development of the region.
- PublicationDesign of an sustainable-development synthetic index and its implementation to the EU(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2004) González Laxe, Fernando I.; Martín Palmero, Federico G.[EN] This article establishes the methodological foundations by designing a global synthetic index of sustainable development which fulfils three conditions: it adapts to the principles of Pressure - State - Response, it adopts the mandates established in Local Agenda 21 and adapts to the four components or basic dimensions of sustainability: institutional, environmental, economic and social. The synthetic index is constructed using the aforesaid methodology and based on the calculations of 78 variables, 37 sub-indicators and 13 indicators, gathered the latter in the previously mentioned four dimensions and subsequently applying this index to the EU countries.
- PublicationEconomic techniques to estimate the demand for sustainable products: A case study for fair trade and organic coffee in the United Kingdom(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2004) Galarraga, Ibon; Markandya, Anil[EN] The hedonic approach is used in this paper to estimate how much is paid for the fair trade/organic characteristic of the coffee in the British market. This information is later combined with the Quantity Based Demand System (QBDS) model –developed by the authors— and the Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) (Deaton and Muellbauer, 1980) to completely determine the demand function for different coffees. The QBDS model is easier to handle and less data demanding than the AIDS model in this study.
- PublicationEnvironmental policy and wage setting(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2004) Campo, María Luz[EN] This paper studies the interaction between the performance of firms and unions and the environmental policy chosen by governments when there is a negative environmental externality from production of a good which only affects the country where the firm is located. I assume that governments choose an upper limit on emissions, unions choose the wage rates and firms choose the employment level. Specifically, I analyze the effect that unionized labor markets have on environmental policy.

- PublicationThe effect of worry about health, interest in gastronomy and social activity over quality wine consumption intensity(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2004) Martínez-Carrasco Martínez, Laura; Brugarolas Mollá-Bauzá, Margarita; Del Campo Gomis, Francisco Jose; Martinez Poveda, Africa[EN] The aim of this work is the design of a theoretical model that explains quality wine consumption frequency. To collect the data, two surveys were carried out: the first one to 50 hostel professionals from Alicante, and the second one to 408 wine consumers from the same region. Structural equation models was used to estimate the model. This method allows for the construction of independent latent (unobserved) variables which influence consumption intensity. Moreover, this analysis permit the quantification of the influence of the theoretical constructs over the dependent variable. The results show that the variable that influence the most over quality wine consumption intensity is the «interest in gastronomy », followed by the «social activity». The «worry about health» has a negative influence over consumption intensity, that is, the highest worry about health, the lowest consumption intensity.
- PublicationThe evolution of the energy intensity of the basque industry from 1982 to 2001: A decomposition analysis(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2004) Ansuategi, Alberto; Arto, Iñaki[EN] In this article an index decomposition methodology is used to estimate the effect of intersectoral and intrasectoral changes in explaining the 38% reduction in industrial energy intensity in the Basque Autonomous Community from 1982 to 2001. Period-wise additive decomposition results show that 1) the decline is mainly explained by intrasectoral changes and that 2) intersectoral changes have hardly contributed to reduce the energy intensity of the Basque industrial sector. However, time-series decomposition analysis shows that 1) four different phases can be distinguished in the evolution of energy intensity of the Basque industry from 1982 to 2001 and 2) that the evolution of the «Iron and Steel» sector is determinant when explaining those phases. Moreover, the analysis stresses the necessity to disaggregate the «Iron and Steel» sector in order to be able to distinguish purely technological effects from the rest of intrasectoral changes.
- PublicationValuation models in an uncertainty environment(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2004) Aznar Bellver, Jerónimo; Guijarro Martínez, Francisco; Facultad de Administración y Dirección de Empresas; Dpto. de Economía y Ciencias Sociales; Instituto Universitario de Matemática Pura y Aplicada[EN] This work presents different uncertainty valuation models that combine precise and imprecise information. We have extended the basic goal programming technique to models that enable handling intervals in the price or exogenous variables expressions, and state some propositions which are able to inform about the accuracy between observed and estimated values. Furthermore, an accuracy index for model comparison is introduced.
