- Publication2003 CAP Reform. An assessment of its impact on the surface, rainfed yields and crop diversity in Spain(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2012-11-26) Ruiz, Jorge; Bardají, Isabel; Garrido, Alberto; Iglesias, Eva[EN] This article evaluates the impacts of the 2003 CAP reform and the implementation of the Single Payment Scheme (SPS) on surface, rainfed crops’ yields and crops diversification in Spain. Using surface data, a statistical analysis is performed to isolate the effect of the SPS with respect to the tendency of the period 1995-2009. Moreover, the impact on the yields of the major rainfed production is analyzed. Finally, an analysis of the production diversity is carried out. Since the introduction of the single payment, the reform has accentuated the response on the market of rainfed crops, which are characterized by a concentration and intensification of production. It had also significant negative effects in the Total Arable Land, including total rainfed and irrigated components.

- PublicationA consumer behaviour approach to analyse handmade and locally made agrifood products in Western Honduras(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2019-01-04) Salazar-Ordóñez, Melania; Cordón-Pedregosa, Rosa; Rodríguez-Entrena, Macario[EN] This research analyses consumer behaviour related to the purchase of handmade and locally made agrifood products in Western Honduras (Occidental Region). A relational model was built, and structural equation modelling (SEM) by means of variance-based partial least squares (PLS) path modelling was applied. The existence of a mediator variable was also examined. The results showed that the consumption of handmade and locally made agrifood products increases for consumers who read nutrition labels and health claim information and for those with higher income and who are younger.
- PublicationA consumer behaviour approach to analyse the sustainability of food purchasing(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2020-12-22) Martinez-Carrasco Martínez, Laura; Brugarolas Mollá-Bauzá, Margarita; Gascón Mora, Andrea[EN] In this study, a survey has been carried out to analyse the purchase choice regarding several packaging options of four basic foods (water, milk, bread and meat). We conducted a segmentation by age to analyse whether the purchasing behaviour changes depending on this variable, and whether it is related to environmental attitudes measured on the New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) scale and to recycling behaviour. Among the results we found that, although young people seem to be slightly more environmentally aware, this does not translate into more sustainable purchases.
- PublicationA critical review of multi-criteria decision making in protected areas(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2017-01-05) Castro Pardo, Mónica de; Urios, Vicente[EN] Multi-criteria analysis in collaborative decision making can provide a useful tool to improve the governance in protected areas with strong conflicts between stakeholders. This paper offers an in-depth review about MCDM methods in protected areas. The analysis considers the topics Land Use, Management, Species, and Zoning and it is based in two dimensions: Methods and Participation. Topics and MCDM methods and Topics and Participation were significantly related and contrasted using a Chi-squared test, respectively. We have identified two groups by topics: Zoning and Species use continuous non participative methods and Land Use and Management use discrete methods with increasing participation.
- PublicationA cross-country comparison of pig production systems performance: Evidence from EU countries(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2023-12-22) Troncoso, Ricardo; Cabas, Juan; Guesmi, Bouali; Gil, José María[EN] This study estimates and analyze the technical efficiency of pork farms from five EU countries. The Generalized True Random-effects (GTRE) model was used to differentiate between persistent and transitory technical efficiency. The results show that elasticities are robust to various specifications. Spanish farms show the highest average efficiency score. In Denmark, Germany, France, and Poland, the most significant opportunities for growth are found in transitional efficiency. The degree of productive specialization in the five countries has a positive impact in the efficiency. In Denmark, Germany, and France, persistent efficiency has a positive association with the fraction of paid labor.
- PublicationA decision framework for a farmer who is risk averse in the Arrow-Pratt sense and downside risk averse(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2014-12-02) Donoso, Guillermo[EN] This study provides a decision framework to analyze optimal production iversification decisions under uncertainty for a farmer who is risk averse in the Arrow-Pratt sense and downside risk averse. The decision model accounts for the third central moment of the joint distribution of portfolio returns. This is relevant for asymmetrical return distributions. This general model contains the classical decision model as a special case. The benefit of the proposed generalization is that each competing behavioral hypothesis is discerned econometrically through the significance of the agent’s coefficient of absolute and/or relative downside risk aversion.
- Publication“A green desert”. ‘Pampas’ agriculture (1988-2018): Enlarged grain production and crisis of family farms(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2019-06-28) Fernández, Diego Ariel[EN] This paper analyses aspects of a factor that contributes to rural depopulation: the process of economic concentration in the argentine Pampas, which was accelerated in the last thirty years of intense productive progress. First, we proceed to quantify the process, using inequality indicators for the sub-period that has census data (1988-2002) and summarizing the information available for the period 2003-2018. Secondly, an exercise of construction of cost structures (differentiating according to the size of the farms) is carried out, exposing the mechanisms that generate the displacement of ‘chacareras’ farms.
- PublicationA multi-index extension of the beta agricultural evaluation method(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2002) Garcia Perez, Jose; Cruz Rambaud, Salvador[EN] The aim of this paper is the study and generalization of the method of the two distribution functions, used in the theory of valuation and, more concretely, in the agrarian valuations. The basic foundation of this method, proposed by Ballestero (1973), is the use of a representative index of the asset that we try to value and in the acceptance of a series of hypotheses on the distribution of the variable index and of the variable value of the asset. Until this moment and in all the works published on this method, the limitation of using a single index (although this is a synthesis of several to which it tries to represent) has remained. In this work it is presented a method that generalizes the previous one and that allows us to work with more than an index, so that it is possible not only to determine the value of an asset with reference to an index but to several ones. The method allows to work with different distribution functions of those used to treat the risk and it presents a test of acceptance of the functions used to model the indexes. Finally, a practical case is developed.
- PublicationA note on water services cost recovery in the Gallego river basin(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2007) Pérez y Pérez, Luis; Barreiro Hurlé, Jesús; Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro[EN] Up to date, water management in Spain has been focused on supply approaches, with the result of providing consumers with this resource at a low price. Developments in the institutional framework regulating water management in the European context (mainly the implementation of the Water Framework Directive) have shifted this approach in order to promote sustainable water use. To achieve this objective, tariff policy must now take into account the water services cost-recovery principle for its different uses. Within this context, this paper estimates the public capital stock related to water supply and assesses the existing level of cost-recovery related to that stock. The methodology used, compares the tax level needed for full-cost recovery with actual revenues from different water-related taxes. The case study area is Gallego River basin in Aragon, and results show the low cost- recovery level for most water services.
- PublicationA proposal to correct external effects in the coffee market: A tax on regular coffee and tea to subsidise the fair trade coffee(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2006) Galarraga, Ibon; Markandya, Anil[EN] This paper justifies the need to introduce a tax on regular coffee drinkers in the UK to subsidise the fair trade/organic coffee production. This policy will allow to take full account of the negative external effect of regular coffee production while internalising the positive effect of fair trade initiatives. Designing such a policy is possible and the benefits of it can be calculated. This paper shows how.
- PublicationA socio-economic sustainability indicator for the Basque tropical tuna purse-seine fleet with a FAD fishing strategy(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2014-01-08) Murillas-Maza, Arantza; Moreno, Gala; Murua, Jefferson; European Commission; Gobierno Vasco/Eusko Jaurlaritza[EN] This article applies the Rapfish methodology, a non-parametric and multi-disciplinary technique, with the objective of defining and evaluating a Sustainability Index of the Basque purse-seine fleet, fishing tropical tuna in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. The estimated Sustainability Index for the fleet fishing in the Indian Ocean is above a critical sustainability threshold and improves between 1998 and 2009. The opposite occurs for the fleet in the Atlantic Ocean. The influence of the growing use of Fish Aggregating Devices on the behaviour of fishers in the Indian Ocean is also analysed.
- PublicationA strategy to increase lamb meat consumption from a relationship marketing perspective(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2024-06-28) Maza, María Teresa; Alvarez, Keyla; Uldemolins, Pilar[EN] A group of restaurants created a club around a lamb meat product to improve its promotion and achieve customers commitment and satisfaction. The objective is to analyse the relationship between the restaurateurs and the final consumer (B2C). A structured questionnaire survey was used to collect the data. Consumers like promotional activities, but their participation is rather low depending on age. From the structural equation model, it was determined that customer satisfaction has a high influence on customer commitment to the establishment; however, promotion and recognition have a very low influence on customer satisfaction and commitment.
- PublicationAdaptation approaches to climate change in China: an operational framework(2011-10-31) Jiahua, Pan; Yan, Zheng; Markandya, Anil[EN] Climate change poses great risks for China, which makes adaptation an essential response. However, adaptation planning and implementation are still at a preliminary stage with respect to the theoretical framework and methodology. This article focuses on the status, problems and basic needs as regards adaptation to climate change, and outlines the operational framework that the government is seeking to pursue for China’s adapting to climate change. The conclusion is that, to satisfy the basic needs of development, it is necessary to clarify development-oriented and incremental adaptation. Furthermore measures to enhance adaptive capacity can be classified as infrastructure-based, technology-based and institutional. Lastly the authors stress the importance of appraising adaptation actions and measures from an economic perspective.
- PublicationAdaptation of agriculture to global change scenarios. Application of participatory methods in the Júcar River basin (Spain)(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2019-01-04) Ortega-Reig, Mar; García-Mollá, Marta; Sanchis-Ibor, Carles; Pulido-Velázquez, Manuel; Girard, Corentin; Marcos, Patricia; Ruiz-Rodríguez, Martin; García-Prats, Alberto[EN] This paper develops a participatory methodology to integrate farmer’s vision in the design of an adaptation strategy to global change in the Jucar River basin. It aims at answering three questions: How farmers perceive climate change impacts; which adaptation measures they consider; and how they assess these measures. Participatory workshops with different actors were held in two areas (La Ribera and La Mancha Oriental). This methodology has allowed identifying the local impacts and consequences of global change, and the difficulties of the adaptation processes to climate change scenarios.
- PublicationAdapting agriculture to climate change(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2011-12-31) Iglesias, Ana; Quiroga, Sonia; Diz, Agustín; Garrote, Luis; European Commission[EN] We evaluate the potential impacts and measure the potential limits of adaptation of agri culture to climate change. Pressures on land and water resources are expected to intensify existing risks in low latitude areas – e.g., South-East Asia deltas – and in regions with current water scarcity – e.g. Mediterranean, and create new opportunities in some northern temperate areas – e.g., Northern Russia, Northern Europe. The need to respond to these risks and opportunities is addressed by evaluating the costs and benefits of a number of technical and policy actions. The discussion aims to assist stakeholders facing the adaptation challenge and develop measures to reduce the vulnerability of the sector to climate change.
- PublicationAdoption and diffusion of no-tillage in the olive groves of the Granada province (Spain)(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2010-01-01) Franco, Juan Agustín; Calatrava, Javier; Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia[EN] This paper analyses the process of adoption of no-tillage in the olive groves of the Southern Spanish province of Granada. The data used comes from a survey carried out in 2005-2006 to 215 olive farmers. We first analyse the diffusion process of no-tillage practices over time by estimating several diffusion models. Then we identify some factors that determine their adoption by estimating two binomial probit models. Our results show that no-tillage is practiced by 90% of surveyed farmers. The diffusion process of no-tillage practices has been intense since the middle nineties, and has been based on the interactions among farmers in the area of study rather than influenced by other external factors. Some relevant factors that influence the adoption of no-tillage practices are irrigation, the continuity of the farming activity by some relative or farmer’s perception of the soil erosion problem.
- PublicationAdoption of water conveyance and monitoring technology in the irrigation communities in the Region of Murcia (Spain)(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2011-10-14) Alcón, Francisco; de Miguel, Mª Dolores; Burton, Michael; Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología[EN] The present paper analyses the process of adopting water management and control technology in the irrigation communities in the region of Murcia from 1975 to 2005. Duration Analysis has been used to combine the technological process with the time taken from the initial stages of the irrigation community until the execution of this plan. The ownership of a subterranean water well and the use of a variable tariff system according to the water consumed have been identified as the moving forces of the adoption process. The policies of subsidies toimprove irrigation technology areas and drought have also affected the adoption decisions.
- PublicationAgrarian landscape preferences study by Conjoint Analysis and Contingent Valuation methods(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2004) Sayadi, Samir; González Roa, Mª Carmen; Calatrava Requena, Javier[EN] Among the externalities produced by agrarian activities one must consider its contribution to the shaping of the landscape, an aesthetic externality value of the agrosystems. Recognizing and appraising this contribution is becoming more and more important every day. In this study a Conjoint Analysis and Contingent Valuation methods has been used to estimate, first the relative importance of the agrarian component level in the utility function achieved from enjoying landscapes, and secondly the Willingness To Pay of surveyed for these landscapes existing in the area of The Alpujarras (Granada-Spain). Data has been obtained by a questionnaire performed to a sample of a potential visitor of the area, using three main features of landscape, as follows: Vegetation layer, level of building, and mountain inclines, each of them with different levels. Subsequently, a multiple regression model has been fitted to identify the relationship between the Willingness to Pay for landscapes and its features and the socio-cultural traits of the individuals. According to results concerning both the preferences and the Willingness To Pay of visitors for landscapes, some conclusions have finally been drawn, allowing to derive strategies to maintain the most valued landscape in the area and to make use of it for the sustainable development of the region.
- PublicationAgri-food cooperative enterprises: From Ballestero to Bijman(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2015-06-26) Juliá Igual, Juan Francisco; Meliá Martí, Elena; Centro de Investigación en Gestión de Empresas (CEGEA); Dpto. de Economía y Ciencias Sociales; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Agronómica y del Medio Natural[EN] Agri-food cooperative enterprises have developed significantly in the EU and are expec-ted to take on an even greater role in the European agri-food industry. Professor Ballestero’s theory and Decalogue for the agricultural cooperative enterprises are particularly relevant. We relate them to the well-known recent European Commission report on farming cooperatives in Europe, led by professor Bijman, and considered to be the largest study to date. Our analysis clearly shows the extent to which professor Ballestero’s theses are still completely valid today.
