[EN] In all cultures those people whoa re able to represent reality in a recognizable way have been distinguished as having a "divine gift" and also, in many cases, this fact has provided them with certain priviledges,s tatus and money. This person, ¿half teacher, half wizard¿, will have developed throughout his learning a set of guidelines and methods to carry out his duties and to safeguard the benefi ts his ability has given him. Only in certain cases, will such knowledge be passed on to his disciples, but in many others, the artist will take it with him to the grave.

[EN] Abstraction has been and remains one of the hallmarks of the architectural creation of modernity. First, abstraction interests us because it avoids the contingent in form. This appears to be a rather negative definition. We intend to go further, review the concept and study the mechanisms of the creators when using abstraction. For this we rely on hand-made drawings of the authors. In this article we set out to analyse and prove the existence of the abstract in contemporary Spanish architecture. We conclude that these works try to stand outside time and space, free from the bondage of matter, formal constraints, social meanings, projecting perhaps, the dream of an essential human space
[EN] This paper on the three concepts of the title (abstraction, transparency and system) provides a brief insight into the evolution of architectural graphic processes in the Early Modern Era. In particular, it identifies specific structural aspects that emerged during this historical period in relation to drawing, art and architecture. The purpose is not so much to reveal what was but what we have inherited, what is imprinted on the genetic code of our contemporary instruments.
- PublicationLo abstracto, Aalto y el dibujo(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2016-05-09) Manzano Jurado, Josemaría[EN] Entering into the abstract imagination of Alvar Aalto by analysing the article published in 1947 in the magazine Domus, entitled Architecture and Concrete Art. From the imaginative experiment of the Viipuri Library and his previous oneiric drawings, and the naturalist metaphors regarding salmon and its life journey, Aalto opens up and reveals his way of thinking without renouncing his rationalist orthodoxy
[EN] The Royal Academy of Spain in Rome stands on what once was the Franciscan Convent of San Pietro in Montorio. This article analyzes its origins and the architectural evolution of the building through pictures, etchings and the historical cartography of Rome. The comparison and study of these images allow the understanding of the complex evolution of this building from its origin until nowadays, and provides interesting information about the elements changed or lost in its architecture, as well as in the landscape of the Gianicolo hill

[EN] This text sets out to illustrate the perceptive analysis of a transformed historic-architectonic space, the new en trance to the Alcazar of Seville, built in the middle of XIVth century. We propose a way of approach to its functionality and symbolism from a fully sentient perspective, because we are convinced that it was built to promote specific emotions. Since the actual aspect of this access is far from its medieval appearance, we made the infographic reconstruction of the original space on the basis of a rigorous planimetric survey and strict archaeological, historical and aesthetic studies. Subsequently, we applied specific architectonic disciplines, methods and terminologies, and through careful observation of the virtual model, we tried to describe, as far as possible, the emotions, experiences and meanings that this architecture would arouse among its contemporary society.
- PublicationLA ACEQUIA GORDA DEL RÍO GENIL EN GRANADA: NECESIDAD DE INTEGRACIÓN URBANA DE UNA INFRAESTRUCTURA MILENARIA(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2012-06-30) León Robles, Carlos; Reinoso Gordo, Juan Francisco; Mataix Sanjuán, Jesús; León Robles, Gloria[EN] The irrigation communities are watering organizations with extensive experience and efficiency managing water resources. This is the reason why they have remained virtually unaltered along the centuries and they have been taken as a model in many countries which have a similar climatology to the Spanish one. In this article, a short review of one of the oldest irrigation communities in Spain, the Acequia Gorda of the Genil River, has been carried out with the purpose of showing its wide experience as well as its consequent dismantling due to an urban expansion that hasn¿t known how to respect and integrate it in the city. Therefore, an important part of our heritage is being lost.
- PublicationACERCA DEL DIBUJO DE OSCAR NIEMEYER(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2010) Franco Taboada, Manuel[EN] This paper is a continuation and development of the work presented to the International Architectural Graphic Expression Congress in Madrid in 2008, under the title: Simple drawing versus simple architecture
- PublicationAction drawing. Una apuesta por el dibujo(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2016-09-29) Salgado de la Rosa, María Asunción; Raposo Grau, Javier Fco.; Butragueño Díaz-Guerra, Belén[EN] The model of unlimited growth of the cities has entered into crisis and its consequences collide head-on with the understanding of the building as the ultimate purpose of the architecture. More than ever, it is necessary to generate a debate on the future of the architecture, raised from new points of view. Open the debate from the graphical experimentation, from the drawing, could be a solution, given that it is a discipline that has experienced one of the biggest technological advancements in recent times
- PublicationActivation of compact architectural systems. The construction of the diagonal projection mechanism in Adolf Loos’ work(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2019-11-18) Toral Guinea, Marta[EN] The activation of compact architectural systems, built by attached spatial units –specialized, qualified, related to each other within a defined and regular container– requires specific tools capable of supplying the lack of dynamic, interstitial and communication spaces. The construction of Loos’ Raumplan implies the development of different relational mechanisms, based on the use of some of these tools. Among them, we can highlight one of great importance for its capacity to activate the interior space. Its construction arises from the evolution of fluctuation and frontality operations inherited from the architectural tradition and it gradually incorporates focal alterations that lead to the diagonal projection. Tools for the qualification of this diagonal perceptual mechanism are studied through a graphic analysis developed by the author.
- PublicationLA ACUARELA Y EL ARQUITECTO.

[EN] Questions related with the developable surfaces theory have had a constant attention from the point of view of the Geometry. In recent years the employment of free forms and double curvature surfaces in Architecture have reported a noticeable development and the need of their constructive resolution and therefore geometric and graphic control have given new impulses to this question. Supported on the development of the digital technology applied to manufacturing and control of the form, we would have seen spectacular results. Using the advances allowed by CAD systems and especially by processing computational and parametrically some classical geometry topics, we have achieved the basis of a method to adapt Freeform Surfaces through Developable Surfaces Using Apparent Contours.
[EN] In the drawings, the look range goes beyond the point of view, it comprises the organization and structure of the physical optical field and the personal imaginary; and they show an organic underside. This is a reflection on the way to include the organic individuality to the work using the drawing. We approach Aalto’s, Siza’s, de la Sota’s, Miralles’ and Navarro Baldeweg’s work through their drawings by the attribute use of their looks, establishing a link between the representation and the space experience built in the specific work of each architect.
- PublicationAldo Van Eyck, a narration between sign and drawing.
