- PublicationHosting virtual group interactions: Language needs(2017) Pérez Sabater, Carmen; Montero Fleta, Maria Begoña; Varhelahti, Mervi; Mac Donald, Penny; García Carbonell, Amparo; Conchado Peiró, Andrea; Dpto. de Estadística e Investigación Operativa Aplicadas y Calidad; Dpto. de Lingüística Aplicada; Centro de Gestión de la Calidad y del Cambio; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Informática; Grupo de Investigación Dimensión Intercultural y Aprendizaje Activo de Lenguas (DIAAL); European Commission[EN] Emerging communication practices in digitally mediated professional settings have changed the paradigm of current workforce requirements. This paper presents the results of a survey on the way people communicate virtually in the workplace and the specific needs that have been detected concerning virtual communication practices. The survey itself was carried out within the context of CoMoViWo, a European Erasmus Project which involves the participation of five European countries. Specifically, the current study carries out a contrastive analysis of the results of the needs analysis of Spanish and Finnish users of digital communication tools. The data obtained from the study highlights the differences found with regard to the communicative strategies preferred by the virtual workers of both countries. Although they all need to communicate formally on most online tools, Spanish workers prefer more informal registers in emails and social networking than Finnish virtual workers. Also, Spanish speakers manifest a greater need than the Finnish interviewees for improving strategies involving greetings, virtual presentations and negotiating. On the other hand, Finnish speakers perceive they only need to develop strategies in managing and/or hosting virtual group interactions. The results reflect the particular identity of both cultures and highlight the importance of understanding multiculturalism in international communication. The study, which has relevant implications, will contribute to the development of learning modules to train future employees to communicate successfully in an increasingly globalized world that is engaged daily in virtual communication.
- PublicationInfluence of firm size on the competencies required to management engineers in the Jordanian telecommunications sector(Taylor & Francis, 2016-06-13) Conchado Peiró, Andrea; Bas Cerdá, María del Carmen; Gharaibeh, Khaled M.; Kaylani, Hazem; Dpto. de Estadística e Investigación Operativa Aplicadas y Calidad; Centro de Gestión de la Calidad y del Cambio; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Informática; European Commission[EN] The objective of this study is to identify the competencies required to achieve success in the transition from higher education to the labour market based on the perceptions of employers. This paper analyses the assessments made by a group of engineering company employers. An item-battery of 20 competencies was grouped into 3 dimensions by using factor analysis. Subsequently, respondents scores were also clustered into three groups and characterised through contingency tables. The competencies demanded by employers were grouped into business and finance, problem-solving and strategic planning. Significant differences were found between responses from employers working in medium and small companies, who placed more importance on competencies related to problem-solving and strategic planning, and employers in big companies, who were more concerned about the difficulties of finding well-trained graduates. The findings from this paper have important implications for research in the areas of higher education and organisations that usually employ graduate engineers.
- PublicationSensitivity Analysis: A Necessary Ingredient for Measuring the Quality of a Teaching Activity Index(Springer Verlag, 2016-03-18) Bas Cerdá, María del Carmen; Tarantola, Stefano; Carot Sierra, José Miguel; Conchado Peiró, Andrea; Dpto. de Estadística e Investigación Operativa Aplicadas y Calidad; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial; Centro de Gestión de la Calidad y del Cambio; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Informática; Generalitat ValencianaIn recent years, and following the introduction of the European Higher Education Area, universities have developed measurement mechanisms to ensure improvement in the quality of their teaching and teaching staff. One of the measurement tools increasingly used in Higher Education to implement continuous improvement policies for university teaching is composite indicators, which are a mathematical aggregation of a selected set of suitably weighted indicators. Composite indicator building should be accompanied by sensitivity analysis to ensure good practice. However, this is rarely done. Sensitivity analysis helps to improve the understanding and, ultimately, the soundness of the composite. In most cases, sensitivity analysis shows that the weights assigned to indicators do not reflect the actual importance of those indicators in the aggregation to the composite because of the heteroskedasticity of, and correlation between the underlying indicators. This paper proposes a composite indicator for the teaching activity of academic staff in a Spanish university. As we shall see in the paper, the desired weights stated by developers rarely represent the effective importance of the components. Hence, we propose sensitivity analysis as a necessary tool for readjusting weights in order to achieve the desired level of importance for each component indicator.

- PublicationA Masters Programme in Telecommunications Management Demand-Based Curriculum design(Taylor & Francis, 2014-10-17) Gharaibeh, Khaled M.; Kaylani, Hazem; Murphy, Noel; Brennan, Conor; Itradat, Awni; Al-Bataineh, Mohammed; Aloqlah, Mohammed; Salhieh, Loay; Altarazi, Safwan; Rawashdeh, Nathir; Bas Cerdá, María del Carmen; Conchado Peiró, Andrea; Al-Zoubi, Asem; Harb, Bassam; Salameh, Haythem Bany; Dpto. de Estadística e Investigación Operativa Aplicadas y Calidad; Centro de Gestión de la Calidad y del Cambio; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Informática; European Commission[EN] This paper presents a curriculum design approach for a Masters Programme in Telecommunications Management based on demand data obtained from surveying the needs of potential students of the proposed programme. Through online surveys disseminated at telecom companies in Jordan, it was possible to measure the demand for such a programme and to determine the required programme contents and specifications. The curriculum design is based on definition of programme outcomes and on using a house of quality approach (HOQ) to determine the list of courses required in the programme. Surveyed competencies are mapped to a long list of proposed courses in a HOQ in order to determine the importance of each of these courses. A final list of core and elective courses is then developed considering the contribution to programme outcomes and the academic standards.

In addition, 88.8% suggested that their innovation skills improved. Overall, the students showed a high degree of engagement and motivation.
- PublicationPuntos fuertes y débiles en la formación por competencias según los graduados universitarios españoles(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2013-04-30) Conchado Peiró, Andrea; Carot Sierra, José Miguel; Dpto. de Estadística e Investigación Operativa Aplicadas y Calidad; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial; Centro de Gestión de la Calidad y del Cambio; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Informática[EN] The objective of this study is to analyze from a descriptive point of view the competences considered by higher Education graduates as strengths or weaknesses in their studies. This objective arises from the growing importance that competences have acquired during the preceding years due to the adaptation process of university degrees to the European Higher Education Area. With this aim in mind some specific results, based on a sample of 5,474 Spanish university graduates and thirteen study programs, are described. Data were obtained from the research project REFLEX «The Flexible Professional in the Knowledge Society: New Demands on Higher Education in Europe». Universities from fourteen European countries and Japan participated in the project, and one of the aims was the analysis of competencies in Higher Education. Results describe how graduates point out to competences related to traditional teaching methods as strengths of their studies, such as knowledge of the field of study, ability to analyze and learn and teamwork, whereas competences related to information and communication technology, and also leadership and ability to speak foreign languages, are revealed as weaknesses of university studies. Besides, several peculiarities have been identified according to the following fields of study: Humanities, Sciences, Engineering, Architecture and Economy and finally Fine Arts.
[EN] The pollen analysis to classify monofloral honey is an unresolved challenge specially when the pollen is under-represented as the case of citrus honey. Thus, this study assesses the validity of the volatile fraction to differ-entiate types of honey, with special attention to markers compounds of citrus honey that could permit their distinction. Unsupervised analysis (PCA and HCA) showed that the volatile fraction of honey containing Citrus sp. pollen, undoubtedly differentiates it from other types of honey. An OPLS model focused on citrus honey selected 5 volatile compounds (of the 123 found in all samples by GC-MS) as significant predictors of the currently used value of methyl anthranilate obtained by HPLC. The joint detection of 4 lilac-aldehydes and the volatile methyl-anthranilate has the advantage of providing more precise information. Therefore, it could be proposed as a consistent marker to ensure the correct classification of citrus honey, fostering its labelling reliability.
- PublicationAcute stress trajectories 1 year after a breast cancer diagnosis(Springer Verlag (Germany), 2016-04) Perez, Sandra; Conchado Peiró, Andrea; Andreu, Yolanda; Galdon, Maria Jose; Cardena, Etzel; Ibanez, Elena; Dura, Estrella; Dpto. de Estadística e Investigación Operativa Aplicadas y Calidad; Centro de Gestión de la Calidad y del Cambio; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería InformáticaPurpose The purpose of this study was to evaluate the longitudinal trajectories of acute stress reactions over the course of diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up assessments in a group of non-metastatic breast cancer patients during five different moments of the illness process, and to identify psychological predictors of the trajectories. Methods The sample was formed by 102 non-metastatic breast cancer patients treated with adjuvant chemotherapy. Latent growth mixture models (LGMM) were used to identify latent classes, and we used multinomial logistic regression in a conditional model to examine predictors to differentiate between trajectories. Results We identified four different groups according to their trajectories: (1) a resilient group, (44.5 %); (2) a mild acute stress group, (40.6 %); (3) a delayed recovery group (11.9 %); and (4) a chronic acute stress group (2.9 %). Moreover, anxious preoccupation showed the strongest significant effects in predicting each class, whereas cognitive avoidance and type C personality had moderate effects for participants in the mild acute stress group. Conclusions This study demonstrates that the majority of breast cancer patients in our study were resilient, with only a small percentage showing chronic acute stress. Because coping strategies, specifically anxious preoccupation, and not more stable variables played a main role in the prediction of acute stress trajectories, future preventive interventions should center in promoting more adaptive coping strategies in breast cancer patients.
