[EN] The bidirectional DC-DC converters are being used more frequently in electric power systems. Bidirectional converters allows the incorporation of alternative and renewable energy sources at different voltage levels, by means of new power systems architectures now distributed not only centralized. The converters control is defined by function within the system, especially when there are large differences in voltage levels. It is desirable that the converter provide galvanic isolation, control current and / or voltage at one or both buses, and in some cases provide multi-port bidirectional conversion. One of the topologies with high power density is the single phase Dual Active Bridge (DAB). This thesis presents a study of a single phase DAB phase shifting controlled to meet the requirements of a bidirectional DC-DC converter for storage, parallel operation capability, high power density and fast dynamic response. The modularity of the DAB and the parallel operation arises from the conception of a control loop of Average Current Control (ACC), a double loop that controls the voltage and current of the high voltage side or controls the current and voltage at low voltage side. The dynamic response of a DAB to load steps are improved by means of a feedforward technique based on load current, an additional load-current feedforward control loop. An analytical study of the load-current feed-forward on DAB is presented and validated by means of both simulations and experimental results. The DAB topology exhibits a high input and output AC current ripple, especially at low voltage side. This thesis studies parallel connection by interleaving an average current control, based on two or more modules DAB operated synchronously but shifted in phase, in order to reduce the AC current and the capacitors size. The design has been validated by means of the implementation and testing on a 1 kW DAB converter at a switching frequency of 100 kHz.

It is well known that conventional energy sources such as coal, oil, and natural gas are decreasing and a growing problem of environmental pollution. The renewable energy sources are becoming the best alternative for a clean and inexhaustible energy source, and solar energy is one of the most popular energy sources. Solar energy has gained more and more attention because of its advantages such as abundance, pollution free, renewability and low maintenance. The solar energy is usually obtained from photovoltaic (PV) cell which transform the solar irradiance into direct current (DC), that is electric energy. Since the majority of the electric devices and the main grid, require AC (alternate current) a power converter is needed to convert the DC electricity coming from the PV cell into AC electricity. The most used electronic converter for that is an inverter. Inverters contains semiconductor switches that are often controlled using the pulse width modulation technique, which yields second-order harmonic currents and corresponding ripple voltages on the DC bus. This double line frequency on the DC bus affect the performance of the photovoltaic system. Bulky DC link electrolytic capacitors are typically employed as transient energy buffer to decouple, or smooth out, the pulsating ac power from constant dc power. However, the use of electrolytic capacitor leads to temperature and aging concerns, and this also result in a low power density. A novel active power decoupling method proposed to add a bidirectional buck and boost converter that can store the ripple energy in its inductor and capacitor. This method can effectively reduce the energy storage in the DC link capacitor. This thesis deals with the design of such as bidirectional DC-DC converter and an inverter. The theoretical work mode of the bidirectional converter together with an inverter is studied. The power stages, inverter and bidirectional converter are studied in steady state to dimension the components. These stages are also modelled in their small signal equivalent model to find their transfer functions need to design the control loops. Different control strategies are studied and implemented to achieve the independent controls of the inverter and DC-DC converter. By using LTspice, the simulation results have verified the proposed power decoupling method.

An adaptive synchronous-reference-frame phase-locked loop for power quality improvement in a polluted utility grid
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2012-06) González Espín, Francisco José; Figueres Amorós, Emilio; Garcerá Sanfeliú, Gabriel; Dpto. de Ingeniería Electrónica; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial; Grupo de Sistemas Electrónicos Industriales
The proper operation of grid-connected power electronics converters needs using a synchronization technique to estimate the phase of the grid voltage. The performance of this synchronization technique is related to the quality of the consumed or delivered electric power. The synchronous-reference-frame phase-locked loop (SRF-PLL) has been widely used due to its ease of operation and robust behavior. However, the estimated phase can have a considerable amount of unwanted ripple if the grid voltage disturbances are not properly rejected. The aim of this paper is to propose an adaptive SRF-PLL which strongly rejects these disturbances even if the fundamental frequency of the grid voltage varies. This is accomplished by using several adaptive infinite-impulse-response notch filters, implemented by means of an inherently stable Schur-lattice structure. This structure is perfectly suited to be programmed in fixed-point DSPs (i.e., it has high mapping precision, low roundoff accumulation, and suppression of quantization limit cycle oscillations). The proposed adaptive SRF-PLL has been tested by means of the TI TMS320F2812 DSP. The obtained experimental results show that the proposed synchronization method highly rejects the undesired harmonics even if the fundamental harmonic frequency of a highly polluted grid voltage abruptly varies. © 2011 IEEE.
