- PublicationA Comparative Analysis between Global University Rankings and Environmental Sustainability of Universities(MDPI AG, 2020-07) Muñoz-Suárez, Manuel; Guadalajara Olmeda, María Natividad; Osca Lluch, José María; Dpto. de Producción Vegetal; Facultad de Administración y Dirección de Empresas; Dpto. de Economía y Ciencias Sociales; Instituto Agroforestal Mediterráneo; Centro de Investigación de Ingeniería Económica; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Agronómica y del Medio Natural[EN] Global University Rankings (GURs) intend to measure the performance of universities worldwide. Other rankings have recently appeared that evaluate the creation of environmental policies in universities, e.g., the Universitas Indonesia (UI) GreenMetric. This work aims to analyze the interaction between the Top 500 of such rankings by considering the geographical location of universities and their typologies. A descriptive analysis and a statistical logistical regression analysis were carried out. The former demonstrated that European and North American universities predominated the Top 500 of GURs, while Asian universities did so in the Top 500 of the UI GreenMetric ranking, followed by European universities. Older universities predominated the Top 500 of GURs, while younger ones did so in the Top 500 of the UI GreenMetric ranking. The second analysis demonstrated that although Latin American universities were barely present in the Top 500 of GURs, the probability of them appearing in the Top 500 of the UI GreenMetric ranking was 5-fold. We conclude that a low association exists between universities' academic performance and their commitment to the natural environment in the heart of their institutions. It would be advisable for GURs to include environmental indicators to promote sustainability at universities and to contribute to climate change.
- PublicationA configurational approach to a country's entrepreneurship level: Innovation, financial and development factors(Elsevier, 2022-02) Cervelló Royo, Roberto Elías; Moya Clemente, Ismael; Perelló Marín, María Rosario; Ribes Giner, Gabriela; Dpto. de Organización de Empresas; Facultad de Administración y Dirección de Empresas; Dpto. de Economía y Ciencias Sociales; Centro de Investigación de Ingeniería Económica; GENERALITAT VALENCIANA[EN] The aim of this study is to analyse the combinations of innovation, financial and sustainable development conditions that enhance the entrepreneurship level of a country. A cross-national analysis, based on data from 64 countries, examines the causal configurations behind the manifestations of these factors using fuzzy-set qualitative comparison analysis. Data were retrieved from four databases: the Global Entrepreneurship Index, the Country Risk Score, the Global Innovation Index and the Sustainable Development Goals Index. In our analysis, we find that the entrepreneurship level of a country is simultaneously related to both its Innovation level and its Country Risk Score. When we study this relationship in association with sustainable development goals, we identify that a country's entrepreneurship level is positively linked with SDG3 and SD11, while with the SDG7 no relationship is found.
- PublicationA cost and performance comparison of Public Private Partnership and public hospitals in Spain(SpringerOpen, 2016) Caballer Tarazona, María; Vivas Consuelo, David José Juan; Facultad de Administración y Dirección de Empresas; Dpto. de Economía y Ciencias Sociales; Centro de Investigación de Ingeniería Económica[EN] Public-private partnership (PPP) initiatives are extending around the world, especially in Europe, as an innovation to traditional public health systems, with the intention of making them more efficient. There is a varied range of PPP models with different degrees of responsibility from simple public sector contracts with the private, up to the complete privatisation of the service. As such, we may say the involvement of the private sector embraces the development, financing and provision of public infrastructures and delivery services. In this paper, one of the oldest PPP initiatives developed in Spain and transferred to other European and Latin American countries is evaluated for first time: the integrated healthcare delivery Alzira model. Through a comparison of public and PPP hospital performance, cost and quality indicators, the efficiency of the PPP experience in five hospitals is evaluated to identify the influence of private management in the results. Regarding the performance and efficiency analysis, it is seen that the PPP group obtains good results, above the average, but not always better than those directly managed. It is necessary to conduct studies with a greater number of PPP hospitals to obtain conclusive results.
- PublicationA credibilistic mean-semivariance-PER portfolio selection model for Latin America(Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, 2019) García García, Fernando; Gonzalez-Bueno, Jairo; Oliver Muncharaz, Javier; Tamosiuniene, Rima; Facultad de Administración y Dirección de Empresas; Dpto. de Economía y Ciencias Sociales; Centro de Investigación de Ingeniería Económica[EN] Many real-world problems in the financial sector have to consider different objectives which are conflicting, for example portfolio selection. Markowitz proposed an approach to determine the optimal composition of a portfolio analysing the trade-off between return and risk. Nevertheless, this approach has been criticized for unrealistic assumptions and several changes have been proposed to incorporate investors' constraints and more realistic risk measures. In this line of research, our proposal extends the mean-semivariance portfolio selection model to a multiobjective credibilistic model that besides risk and return, also considers the price-to-earnings ratio to measure portfolio performance. Uncertain future returns and PER ratio of each asset are approximated using L-R power fuzzy numbers. Furthermore, we consider budget, bound and cardinality constraints. To solve the constrained portfolio optimization problem, we use the algorithm NSGA-II. We assess the proposed approach generating a portfolio with shares included in the Latin American Integrated Market. Results show that this new approach is a good alternative to solve the portfolio selection problem when multiple objectives are considered.
- PublicationA farm compensation model to reduce the risk of pest spreading: An application for Xylella fastidiosa in Mediterranean agriculture(Taylor & Francis, 2022-12-31) Ribal Sanchis, Francisco Javier; Marqués Pérez, Inmaculada; Segura, Marina; Centro de Investigación en Gestión de Empresas (CEGEA); Facultad de Administración y Dirección de Empresas; Dpto. de Economía y Ciencias Sociales; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería del Diseño; Centro de Investigación de Ingeniería Económica; Generalitat Valenciana; Universitat Politècnica de València[EN] Eradication measures are used when a pest or pathogen invades a free area, the objective being to control its outbreak by eliminating or reducing its population levels in that area, which involves removing all infected plants. Xylella fastidiosa is one of the most notorious plant pathogens presently emerging in Europe. This bacterium is a pathogen of concern for many plants globally, and has a broad range of wild and cultivated hosts common in Europe. Given that there is no effective treatment to reduce the repercussions of this disease, its spread poses a severe risk to European agriculture. The EU has designed mandatory plant health measures for the purposes of implementing an eradication or containment strategy. Since an eradication strategy depends on the actions of farmers, it is vital to adopt measures that encourage behavior that helps reduce the risk of spread. In this paper, we have developed a field-scale economic analysis, which links production costs, revenue, agronomic factors, and mandatory protection measures, and allows us to estimate the losses caused over time by pests or pathogens at the farm level, and the age-dependent payments that farmers should receive. This way a confidence interval for fair compensation can be obtained. This compensation serves to design positive incentives for farmers to inform government authorities about the presence of bacteria on their farms and participate in eradication programmes. We apply our economic modelling to Xylella fastidiosa in vineyards, and on olive and citrus plants, in the Valencian Community of Spain in Europe.
- PublicationA Multicriteria Goal Programming Model for Ranking Universities(MDPI AG, 2021-03) García García, Fernando; Guijarro Martínez, Francisco; Oliver Muncharaz, Javier; Facultad de Administración y Dirección de Empresas; Dpto. de Economía y Ciencias Sociales; Centro de Investigación de Ingeniería Económica; Instituto Universitario de Matemática Pura y Aplicada[EN] This paper proposes the use of a goal programming model for the objective ranking of universities. This methodology has been successfully used in other areas to analyze the performance of firms by focusing on two opposite approaches: (a) one favouring those performance variables that are aligned with the central tendency of the majority of the variables used in the measurement of the performance, and (b) an alternative one that favours those different, singular, or independent performance variables. Our results are compared with the ranking proposed by two popular World University Rankings, and some insightful differences are outlined. We show how some top-performing universities occupy the best positions regardless of the approach followed by the goal programming model, hence confirming their leadership. In addition, our proposal allows for an objective quantification of the importance of each variable in the performance of universities, which could be of great interest to decision-makers.
- PublicationA multiobjective credibilistic portfolio selection model. Empirical study in the Latin American Integrated Market(Enterpreneurship and Sustainability Center, 2020) García García, Fernando; Gonzalez-Bueno, Jairo; Guijarro Martínez, Francisco; Oliver Muncharaz, Javier; Facultad de Administración y Dirección de Empresas; Dpto. de Economía y Ciencias Sociales; Centro de Investigación de Ingeniería Económica; Instituto Universitario de Matemática Pura y Aplicada[EN] This paper extends the stochastic mean-semivariance model to a fuzzy multiobjective model, where apart from return and risk, also liquidity is considered to measure the performance of a portfolio. Uncertainty of future return and liquidity of each asset are modeled using L-R type fuzzy numbers that belong to the power reference function family. The decision process of this novel approach takes into account not only the multidimensional nature of the portfolio selection problem but also realistic constraints by investors. Particularly, it optimizes the expected return, the semivariance and the expected liquidity of a given portfolio, considering cardinality constraint and upper and lower bound constraints. The constrained portfolio optimization problem resulting is solved using the algorithm NSGA-II. As a novelty, in order to select the optimal portfolio, this study defines the credibilistic Sortino ratio as the ratio between the credibilistic risk premium and the credibilistic semivariance. An empirical study is included to show the effectiveness and efficiency of the model in practical applications using a data set of assets from the Latin American Integrated Market.
- PublicationA multiobjective model for passive portfolio management: an application on the S&P 100 index(Taylor & Francis: SSH Journals, 2013) García García, Fernando; Guijarro Martínez, Francisco; Moya Clemente, Ismael; Facultad de Administración y Dirección de Empresas; Dpto. de Economía y Ciencias Sociales; Centro de Investigación de Ingeniería Económica; Instituto Universitario de Matemática Pura y AplicadaIndex tracking seeks to minimize the unsystematic risk component by imitating the movements of a reference index. Partial index tracking only considers a subset of the stocks in the index, enabling a substantial cost reduction in comparison with full tracking. Nevertheless, when heterogeneous investment profiles are to be satisfied, traditional index tracking techniques may need different stocks to build the different portfolios. The aim of this paper is to propose a methodology that enables a fund s manager to satisfy different clients investment profiles but using in all cases the same subset of stocks, and considering not only one particular criterion but a compromise between several criteria. For this purpose we use a mathematical programming model that considers the tracking error variance, the excess return and the variance of the portfolio plus the curvature of the tracking frontier. The curvature is not defined for a particular portfolio, but for all the portfolios in the tracking frontier. This way funds managers can offer their clients a wide range of risk-return combinations just picking the appropriate portfolio in the frontier, all of these portfolios sharing the same shares but with different weights. An example of our proposal is applied on the S&P 100.
- PublicationA Short-Term Population Model of the Suicide Risk: The Case of Spain(Springer-Verlag, 2018) Poza Plaza, Elena de la; Jódar Sánchez, Lucas Antonio; Facultad de Administración y Dirección de Empresas; Dpto. de Matemática Aplicada; Dpto. de Economía y Ciencias Sociales; Instituto Universitario de Matemática Multidisciplinar; Centro de Investigación de Ingeniería Económica[EN] A relevant proportion of deaths by suicide have been attributed to other causes that produce the number of suicides remains hidden. The existence of a hidden number of cases is explained by the nature of the problem. Problems like this involve violence, and produce fear and social shame in victims' families. The existence of violence, fear and social shame experienced by victims favours a considerable number of suicides, identified as accidents or natural deaths. This paper proposes a short time discrete compartmental mathematical model to measure the suicidal risk for the case of Spain. The compartment model classifies and quantifies the amount of the Spanish population within the age intervals (16, 78) by their degree of suicide risk and their changes over time. Intercompartmental transits are due to the combination of quantitative and qualitative factors. Results are computed and simulations are performed to analyze the sensitivity of the model under uncertain coefficients.

Despite the long-standing tradition of some higher education systems, Higher Education continuously evolves to adapt to the challenges that current societies open up to. The objective of this book is to capture some recent advances made in Higher Education by addressing these challenges. To do so, some specific topics related to the inputs, outputs and process of education in Higher Education were selected to be analysed by a scientific research approach. The book is arranged in five parts in accordance with these topics. Part I is related to the most important input of higher education institutions, that is, students, and particularly to address students’ preparation when they access higher education studies. The next three parts of the book analyse different aspects of the learning process that take place in Higher Education. Part II assesses student learning from different points of view. Part III contains two chapters on the creation and availability of resources in higher education institutions. Part IV describes and analyses some innovative teaching and learning methods. Finally, Part V consists of three chapters that deal with the relation of Higher Education with industry, which is the main destination of graduates.
- PublicationAgricultural land values using Geographic Information Systems: design location model and tools for information available by geoportal. Application to a Spanish Agricultural Area(Maney Publishing, 2018) Marqués Pérez, Inmaculada; Mora Navarro, Joaquín Gaspar; Pérez-Salas Sagreras, Jose Luis; Velilla-Torres, Joan Manuel; Femenia Ribera, Carmen; Dpto. de Economía y Ciencias Sociales; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería del Diseño; Dpto. de Ingeniería Cartográfica Geodesia y Fotogrametría; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Geodésica, Cartográfica y Topográfica; Centro de Investigación de Ingeniería Económica; Grupo de Cartografía, Geodesia y GPS[EN] Quantifying the effect of location on land values can be done by designing a location factor which considers the most relevant aspects that may influence this value such as proximity to large cities, the population living around the parcel or land to be valued, the distance from it to markets or logistic centres, or the existence of places of environmental or landscape interest. Considering these variables can be complicated by having to process large amounts of distinct data (distances, no. of inhabitants or population size, protected areas, etc.), which have to be processed and interpreted to be able to define the factor that summarises them, and can affect the land value from income, such as productive assets, to correct its value. The main proposal put forward in this research is to study the various location aspects that affect land values, and the possibilities that Geographic Information Systems (GIS) offer to design with free software tools that allow simple calculations of a location correction factor and, consequently, land values. Calculations were made for all the rural cadastral parcels (2.3 million) in the Valencian Region. Results can be integrated into a new online GIS portal and make these available to users in soil valuation studies.

[EN] Agricultural life cycle assessment (LCA) at the sub-national regional level may be a valuable input for the decision-makers. Obtaining representative and sufficient data to develop life cycle inventories (LCIs) at that level is a relevant challenge. This study aims to contribute to the development of LCIs representative Spanish crops based on economic and operational information available in official sources to assess the average environmental impacts of these crops in the main producing regions. A comprehensive approach is proposed considering both the temporal variability and uncertainty of input data by using different methods (e.g. linear programming, weighted averages, Monte Carlo simulation, forecasted irrigation, etc.) to estimate the inventory data of reference holdings. From these inventories, the environmental assessment of those reference holdings is carried out. Two case studies are developed, on orange and tomato crops in the main producing regions, where climate change (CC), freshwater scarcity (WS), human toxicity non-cancer (HTnc), and freshwater ecotoxicity (ET) are evaluated. The environmental scores obtained differ significantly from region to region. The highest environmental scores of orange reference holdings correspond to Comunidad Valenciana for CC (1.94·10¿1 kg CO2 eq.) HTnc (4.16·10¿11 CTUh) and ET (7.45·10¿3 CTUe), and to Andalucia in WS (17.4 m3 world eq.). As to greenhouse tomatoes, the highest scores correspond to Comunidad Valenciana in the four categories analysed (CC = 3.18 kg CO2 eq., HTnc = 3.6·10¿9 CTUh, ET = 1.5 CTUe and WS = 13.3 m3 world eq.). The environmental scores estimated in this study are consistent with the literature, showing that the approach is useful to obtain a representative description of the environmental profile of crops from official statistical data and other information sources. Widening the data gathered in ECREA-FADN, and also that from other data sources used, would increase the quality of the environmental impact estimation.
