- PublicationConsequences of a severe drought on spatial paterns of woody plants in a two-phase mosaic steppe of Stipa tenacissima L.(Elsevier, 2002-11-14) García-Fayos, Patricio; Gasque Albalate, Maria Concepcion; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Agronómica y del Medio Natural; Dpto. de Física Aplicada; Generalitat Valenciana; Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas[EN] The establishment and development of the plants of S. tenacissima L. organize a source¿sink pattern of water and sediments from bare soil areas to tussocks on mountain slopes forming small terraces or terracettes upslope of tussocks. We hypothesized that terracettes enhance woody plant survival compared with woody plants on bare soil. We examined this hypothesis at three locations in south-eastern Spain after a severe drought from 1993 to 1995. The spatial association of individual plants and the pattern of plant mortality support the hypothesis that the terracettes formed by S. tenacissima tussocks facilitate woody plants. The prediction that facilitation dominates interference during stress periods such as drought was supported by mortality patterns. Drought effects alone do not explain spatial patterns of woody plants in the two-phase mosaic steppe of Stipa tenacissima.
- PublicationRiego deficitario controlado en 'Clementina de Nules'. II. Efectos sobre el crecimiento vegetativo(Instituto Nacional de Investigacion y Tecnologia Agraria y Alimentaria, 2003-06-01) González Altozano, Pablo; Castel, J. R.; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Agronómica y del Medio Natural; Dpto. de Ingeniería Rural y Agroalimentaria; EUREF; Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Agrarias; Comisión Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnología[EN] This article describes the effects of three seeding unit designs on plant residue clearance along the central line ofdirect corn (Zea Mays L.) seeding and the subsequent influence on crop emergence. The equipment assemblies testedwere three different combinations of the implements turbo coulter blade (TCB), double disc opener with a seed presswheel and covering/packing wheels (DDO), notched disc row cleaner with a track wheel or floating star cleaner (RC)as follows: (1) TCB+DDO, (2) RC+TCB+DDO and (3) TCB+RC+DDO. Under the field conditions tested, residueclearance before the cutting action of the turbo coulter blade (combination 2) gave rise to the best crop stand and cropuniformity. The seeding assembly that moves soil and clears away plant debris along the seeding furrow shows a directeffect on seed emergence.
- PublicationAutomatic evaluation of the image quality of a mammographic phantom(Elsevier, 2004-02) Mayo Nogueira, Patricia; Ródenas Escribá, Francisco de Asís; Verdú Martín, Gumersindo Jesús; Villaescusa, J.I; Campayo, Juan Manuel; Dpto. de Ingeniería Química y Nuclear; Dpto. de Matemática Aplicada; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial; Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura; Instituto Universitario de Matemática Pura y Aplicada; Instituto Universitario de Seguridad Industrial, Radiofísica y Medioambiental[EN] In this work a method has been developed to analyse the digital image quality of a mammographic phantom by means of automatic process techniques. The techniques used for the digital image treatment are standard techniques as the image thresholding to detect objects, the regional growing for pixels pooling and the morphological operator application to determine the objects shape and size, etc. This study allows the obtention of information about the phantom characteristics, that due to its small size and lowly contrast can be obtained very difficultly by direct observation. The final aim of this work is to obtain one or more parameters to characterize the reference phantom quality image in an objective way. These parameters will serve to compare images obtained at different mammographic centers and also, to study the temporal evolution of the image quality produced by determined mammographic equipment.
- PublicationSolving the Inverse Dynamic Control for Low Cost Real-Time Industrial Robot Control Applications(Cambridge University Press, 2003-06) Valera Fernández, Ángel; Mata Amela, Vicente; Vallés Miquel, Marina; Valero, F.; Rosillo, N.; Benimeli Andreu, Francesc Xavier; Dpto. de Ingeniería de Sistemas y Automática; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Informática; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería del Diseño; Instituto Universitario de Investigación Concertado de Ingeniería Mecánica y Biomecánica; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial; Instituto Universitario de Automática e Informática Industrial; Dpto. de Ingeniería Mecánica y de Materiales[EN] This work deals with the real-time robot control implementation. In this paper, an algorithm for solving Inverse Dynamic Problem based on the Gibbs-Appell equations is proposed and verified. It is developed using mainly vectorial variables, and the equations are expressed in a recursive form, it has a computational complexity of O(n). This algorithm will be compared with one based on Newton-Euler equations of motion, formulated in a similar way, and using mainly vectors in their recursive formulation. This algorithm was implemented in an industrial PUMA robot. For the robot control a new and open architecture based on PC had been implemented. The architecture used has two main advantages. First it provides a total open control architecture, and second it is not expensive. Because the controller is based on PC, any control technique can be programmed and implemented, and in this way the PUMA can work on high level tasks, such as automatic trajectory generation, task planning, control by artificial vision, etc.
- PublicationViroids: the minimal non-coding RNAs with autonomous replication(John Wiley & Sons, 2004-06-01) FLORES PEDAUYE, RICARDO; Delgado Villar, Sonia Guadalupe; Gas, María-Eugenia; Carbonell Olivares, Alberto; Molina, Diego; Gago, Selma; La Peña Del Rivero, Marcos de; Instituto Universitario Mixto de Biología Molecular y Celular de Plantas; Generalitat Valenciana; Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología[EN] Viroids are small (246¿401 nucleotides), non-coding, circular RNAs able to replicate autonomously in certain plants. Viroids are classified into the families Pospiviroidae and Avsunviroidae, whose members replicate in the nucleus and chloroplast, respectively. Replication occurs by an RNA-based rolling-circle mechanism in three steps: (1) synthesis of longerthan-unit strands catalyzed by host DNA-dependent RNA polymerases forced to transcribe RNA templates, (2) processing to unit-length, which in family Avsunviroidae is mediated by hammerhead ribozymes, and (3) circularization either through an RNA ligase or autocatalytically. Disease induction might result from the accumulation of viroid-specific small interfering RNAs that, via RNA silencing, could interfere with normal developmental pathways.
