- PublicationA 5S Lean Strategy for a Sustainable Welding Process(MDPI AG, 2022-06) Manzanares-Cañizares, Carlos; Sánchez-Lite, Alberto; Rosales-Prieto, Víctor F.; Fuentes Bargues, José Luis; González-Gaya, Cristina; Dpto. de Proyectos de Ingeniería; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial; C.Inv.Dirección Proyectos,Innov.yS.PRINS; Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia[EN] The correct performance of the welding processes used to join metal parts or structural elements is considered to be of vital importance to guarantee the reliability of these products during their useful lives. Adequate workstation design ensures a safe environment in which an operator can perform these processes correctly. In order to guarantee the quality of welding seams, which are used to join metal parts and structural elements, a series of standards have been developed; these standards establish requirements to guarantee the correct performance of welding processes, and the inspection of the metal welds obtained. The 5S methodology has proven to be a valid tool for improving workplaces in industrial and service activities; it is a capstone methodology when companies implement lean production approaches. This work presents a framework for applying the 5S methodology in metal welding workplaces. It defines an index to evaluate the degree of implementation of the 5S methodology, and the application of the important performance analysis methodology (IPA). Fuzzy logic is used to treat the uncertainty in evaluating the different evaluation indicators proposed. This framework is applied to a real practical case, to provide an example of its use in establishing good manufacturing practices that guarantee compliance with the requirements of welding standards, and guaranteeing the correct handling and storage of the materials and tools used in welding processes for the manufacture of welded parts and structural elements.
- PublicationA Comparative Analysis of Statistical Models and Mathematics in Reverse Osmosis Evaluation Processes as a Search Path to Achieve Better Efficiency(MDPI AG, 2022-08) Villena-Martínez, Esteban Manuel; Alvizuri-Tintaya, Paola Andrea; Lora García, Jaime; Torregrosa López, Juan Ignacio; Lo Iacono Ferreira, Vanesa Gladys; Dpto. de Ingeniería Química y Nuclear; Dpto. de Proyectos de Ingeniería; Instituto Universitario de Seguridad Industrial, Radiofísica y Medioambiental; Escuela Politécnica Superior de Alcoy; C.Inv.Dirección Proyectos,Innov.yS.PRINS; Universitat Politècnica de València; Universidad Católica Boliviana San Pablo[EN] An effective alternative for water purification is reverse osmosis (RO). Laboratory-scale RO modeling is widely applied worldwide, and allows the evaluation of the behavior of the system to find the most convenient operating variables to be applied in future industrial scale-ups. Statistical models provide a wide range of information that allows a statistical prediction of the operation of the plant, and allows us to obtain efficiency indices in its development; these are useful in the planning, operation and monitoring process in RO plants. The mathematical models describe the physical behavior of the membrane and allow the identification of optimal operating conditions, taking into account economic aspects, guaranteeing a greater implementation of RO technology in developing countries which have problems with water contaminated with toxic heavy metals. The present work shows a review of different statistical and mathematical models, and the suitability of these in the analysis of RO in the separation of heavy metals in drinking water that can be applied in countries with serious environmental problems. Bolivia and several river basins, such as the Guadalquivir and Milluni, present this type of problem. A comparative method is proposed to establish the advantages and selection criteria to apply the different models in IO.
- PublicationA critical review of the current research mainstreams and the influencing factors of green total factor productivity(Springer-Verlag, 2021-07) Zhang, Jingxiao; Lu, Guanyang; Skitmore, Martin; Ballesteros Pérez, Pablo; Dpto. de Proyectos de Ingeniería; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial; C.Inv.Dirección Proyectos,Innov.yS.PRINS; European Social Fund; National Natural Science Foundation of China; Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades[EN] The current world economy needs to undergo a green transformation. Green total factor productivity provides the basis for judging whether a country or region can attain long-term sustainable development. However, there is little research into the factors that influence green total factor productivity and this has become an obstacle in the transition to a greener economy. On filtering relevant articles and interviews data collected from 2009 to 2019, open decoding, spindle decoding, and selective decoding are carried out to classify research conducted into green total factor productivity. From this analysis, cutting-edge research and knowledge gaps in green total factor productivity are identified. Also, an influencing factor model of green total factor productivity is built. Findings suggest that technical, economic, and government are the three main research streams involved in this transformation process. In particular, technology plays a decisive role, economy plays a guaranteeing role, and government plays a regulatory role. Moreover, the impact of these factors cannot be isolated, as each influence and mediate the other two. Results from this study will help further popularize green total factor productivity and provide a new starting point for reducing energy consumption and environmental pollution.
- PublicationA DECISION MODEL FOR DETERMINING PUBLIC LOCATIONS SUITABLE FOR AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR (AED) DEPLOYMENT: A CASE STUDY IN THE CITY OF VALENCIA(Creative Decisions Foundation, 2017) Ekmekci, Esin; Aragonés Beltrán, Pablo; Rodríguez de Sanabria Gil, Rafael; Topcu, Y. Ilker; Dpto. de Proyectos de Ingeniería; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial; C.Inv.Dirección Proyectos,Innov.yS.PRINS[EN] Automated external defibrillators (AED) offered a new perspective on resuscitation by enabling first-responders to deliver life-saving defibrillation within the critical first minutes after sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). This raised the question about where to place the AEDs. This study aims to provide a novel approach to the problem and to serve as a guideline for health policy decision makers in future projects. We used the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to form a decision model with four main criteria, and six sub-criteria. ¿Response time¿ was the most important criterion with an importance of 65.07%. Locations with the highest scores were a sports center, two stadiums, the central market, and the central bus station. A simple ranking of the alternatives would not be sufficient for the purpose of this study because the aim is to offer a guide for selecting locations for deploying AEDs rather than ranking the alternatives according to their suitability. Therefore, we formed priority groups. Sensitivity analysis showed that especially the alternatives in the first-priority group are not highly sensitive to changes, emphasizing their importance.
- PublicationA Methodology to Detect the Deviations of the Project s Budget Compared to Market Prices(Horizon Research Publishing, 2015) Fuentes Bargues, José Luis; González Cruz, María Carmen; González-Gaya, Cristina; Díaz de Mera-Sánchez. Mª del Prado; Dpto. de Proyectos de Ingeniería; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial; C.Inv.Dirección Proyectos,Innov.yS.PRINS[EN] The budget of a project reflects the cost of the investment needed to build an infrastructure, install a system or acquire new materials or supplies. A well-formulated budget in accordance with market prices, allows contractors to prepare offers according to their technical, economic and financial characteristics. On the other hand, it avoids current philosophies that aim to get the contract at any price. Philosophies subsequently used to point out problems and claims during the execution of the project (contradictory prices, delays, etc.) in order to recover some or the entire economic bid carried out during the tendering. In this paper a simple and fast methodology is developed to check if the tendering price is in accordance with market prices, so that the economic viability of the project is not at risk. The application of the methodology on a sample of projects allows us to check the influence of the type of project (civil or building) on the characteristics of the budget. It also allows us to point out the insufficient economic endowment of the projects as the start of the subsequent problems during the execution of the work.
- PublicationA methodology to select the price criterion in public procurement(DRUNPP, 2015) Fuentes Bargues, José Luis; González Cruz, María Carmen; Gonzalez-Gaya, Cristina; Díaz de Mera-Sanchez, María del Prado; Dpto. de Proyectos de Ingeniería; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial; C.Inv.Dirección Proyectos,Innov.yS.PRINS[EN] The construction sector is a key driver for economic growth in any nation and public procurement is one of its pillars hence the importance of the study and investigation of its mechanisms, especially tendering criteria. Price is the main deciding factor for most tenders and projects must have an appropriate base price relative to market price to avoid problems during the execution of the project. Most research on price criteria has been developed from the point of view of bidders and has discussed the development of tools and methodologies for determining the optimal bid price. In this paper we propose a methodology for public procurement procedures from the point of view of the administration. The methodology enables setting all aspects of the price criterion based on the size of the project budget, the nature of the work, and the number of bidders.
- PublicationA multi-criteria genetic algorithm for the generation of job rotation schedules(Elsevier, 2008) Diego Más, José Antonio; Asensio Cuesta, Sabina; Sánchez Romero, Miguel Ángel; Artacho Ramírez, Miguel Ángel; Instituto Universitario de Tecnologías de la Información y Comunicaciones; Dpto. de Proyectos de Ingeniería; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería del Diseño; Instituto Universitario de Investigación en Tecnología Centrada en el Ser Humano; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial; C.Inv.Dirección Proyectos,Innov.yS.PRINS[EN] Job rotation is a method of work organization by which working conditions can be improved. A change of activity reduces job monotony, fatigue, the risk of musculoskeletal disorders and cumulative trauma disorders. In order to develop a rotation plan that achieves the maximum benefit obtainable from this technique, the multiple factors that affect it must be considered simultaneously. This paper proposes a genetic algorithm that allows the planner to achieve job rotation schedules that aim to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders, obtaining maximum diversification of the jobs carried out during working hours, and which take into account both permanent and temporary disabilities of the workers as well as their preferences. The fundamental contribution of the method lies in its focus on multi-criteria analysis and its ability to include new factors in the evaluation of solutions without the need to substantially modify the algorithm. This algorithm is then implemented by a computer program, which thus becomes a flexible tool to aid the planner. Relevance to industry: The results of this study suggest that the algorithm presented could be an efficient tool in the development of a rotation program, obtaining practical results within the scope of realistic possibilities of the plant.
- PublicationA new photovoltaic floating cover system for water reservoirs(Elsevier, 2013-12) Ferrer Gisbert, Carlos Manuel; Ferran Gozalvez, José Javier; Redón Santafé, Miguel; Ferrer Gisbert, Pablo Sebastián; Sánchez Romero, Francisco Javier; Torregrosa Soler, Juan Bautista; Dpto. de Ingeniería Rural y Agroalimentaria; Dpto. de Proyectos de Ingeniería; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería del Diseño; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Agronómica y del Medio Natural; C.Inv.Dirección Proyectos,Innov.yS.PRINS; Universitat Politècnica de ValènciaThis paper describes a new photovoltaic floating cover system for water reservoirs developed jointly by the company CELEMIN ENERGY and the Universidad Politecnica de Valencia. - PublicationA study of situational circumstances related to Spain¿s occupational accident rates in the metal sector from 2009 to 2019(Elsevier, 2022-06) Fuentes Bargues, José Luis; Sanchez-Lite, A.; González-Gaya, C.; Rosales-Prieto, Victor Fco.; Reniers, G.; Dpto. de Proyectos de Ingeniería; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial; C.Inv.Dirección Proyectos,Innov.yS.PRINS; MINISTERIO DE ECONOMÍA Y COMPETITIVIDAD[EN] The metal sector encompasses a variety of economic activities, such as metallurgy and the manufacturing of metallic elements. These activities represent great diversity in production processes. Worker-related character-istics are particularly important in these processes and the accident rate. In view of the metal sector¿s importance and that the latest annual report (2019) reveals the sector to be among the ten sectors with Spain¿s highest accident rates, the purpose of this study is to explore the evolution of work accidents in the metal-mechanical sector in Spain for the period of 2009¿2019 and to analyse the relationship between the associated variables. Data for this study come from occupational accident reports, which are required to be sent to the relevant administrative bodies using the Spanish Delt@ (electronic declaration of injured workers) computer system. The study variables were selected from the of¿cial occupational accident data and classi¿ed into four groups: per-sonal, business, material, and time period. The relationships between severity and other variables were explored via contingency tables in which the chi-squared value (¿2) was calculated. This study shows a slight improve-ment in the accident rate over the last decade, but a high percentage of serious and fatal accidents in the Spanish industrial sector remains. The Monday effect, meal breaks, and being near retirement age are the most important factors in¿uencing the number of serious accidents in this sector.

Methods Literature searches were conducted in six databases without language or date restrictions. Data on the titles, types of study, main subjects, countries of origin, keywords, years of publication, authors and their network collaborations, journals and sleep studies were extracted and analysed using VantagePoint (TM) software. Results A total of 725 studies met the eligibility criteria. Most included only children (75.31%), with observational design (66.34%), and risk or aetiology (53.93%) as the main subject. Brazil (18.06%) and Brazilian authors (54.84%) had the largest number of studies, with a low amount of network collaboration. The Journal of Oral Rehabilitation published most of the studies (6.2%); publications in this field have grown considerably from 2000 to 2020. Of the studies, 123 (16.96%) included sleep studies; night sweating, restless sleep, sleep talking, mouth breathing, snoring, obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome, sleep-disordered breathing, nightmares, poor sleep quality and duration, and daytime naps were significantly associated with bruxism in most. Conclusion Studies on bruxism in children and adolescents have increased in the past 20 years, with most being observational, and risk or aetiology as the main subject. Brazil and the Journal of Oral Rehabilitation have published most in the field. Sleep studies have shown some features associated with bruxism, such as night sweating, restless sleep, somniloquy, snoring, breathing problems, nightmares, daytime naps, and poor sleep quality and duration.
- PublicationAbnormally Low Tenders in Non-pricing Criteria: the Need for Control(Horizon Research Publishing, 2016) Fuentes Bargues, José Luis; González Cruz, María Carmen; González-Gaya, Cristina; Dpto. de Proyectos de Ingeniería; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial; C.Inv.Dirección Proyectos,Innov.yS.PRINS[EN] As public procurement accounts for approximately 10 to 15% of gross domestic product (GDP) in developed countries, tendering mechanisms should be clearly defined in order to avoid any actions that could endanger the basic principle that all bidders should be on equal terms. An Abnormally Low Tender (ALT) is defined as an offer too low to provide a normal level of profit and that cannot be explained on the basis of construction methods, the technical solution chosen, the originality of the work, or the favorable conditions of the tenderer. Public bodies are well aware of the risk of accepting an offer that cannot be carried out and despite the difficulty of detection recommendations for their prevention usually focus on the price criterion. Most tenders are awarded to the economically most advantageous tender (EMAT), which is assessed by various criteria (including price), though other criteria often have equal or greater weight in the final decision. The method used in this research study is divided into two main phases. First, the score of the bidders is obtained for criteria evaluated by formulae other than price, based on the contract terms of three case studies, after which new scores for these award criteria are obtained from ALT formulae, then, the results of both scoring methods are analyzed. This paper defends the need to control abnormally low tenders by means of award criteria evaluated by formulae other than those of price.
- PublicationAdequacy of existing circular economy assessment tools for higher education institutions(Elsevier, 2023-07) Valls-Val, Karen; Ibañez-Forés, Valeria; Lo Iacono Ferreira, Vanesa Gladys; Capuz Rizo, Salvador Fernando; Bovea, María D.; Dpto. de Proyectos de Ingeniería; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial; Escuela Politécnica Superior de Alcoy; C.Inv.Dirección Proyectos,Innov.yS.PRINS; Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades[EN] Circular economy (CE) has been identified as a key strategy to contribute to sustainable development and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda. In this context, organisations have started to demand methods to measure and monitor their level of circularity. To facilitate this task, several CE tools have been developed in recent years, which automatically measure, track and communicate the level of circularity of organisations based on answers to qualitative questions. In particular, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), as organisations engaged in education, research and community services, play an important role in promoting sustainability and should be an example in the transition process towards CE. Therefore, they need approaches that allow them to measure and monitor their transition towards CE. The aim of this study is to analyse the adequacy of existing CE tools for HEIs, to check whether they consider the specificities of HEIs and to identify the required changes to make them suitable for HEIs. For this purpose, seven existing CE tools were applied to four Spanish HEIs, and were analysed and evaluated through interviews with the environmental managers of these HEIs. The results show that the existing CE tools need to be reformulated in order to make them suitable for assessing the level of circularity of HEIs and to make their outputs useful for decision-making. As a conclusion, it has been found that it is better to develop a specific CE tool for HEIs, in order to incorporate the specificities and peculiarities of such complex type of organisation, including the teaching, research and management areas.
- PublicationAn AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process)/ANP (Analytic Network Process)-based multi- criteria decision approach for the selection of solar-thermal power plant investment projects(Elsevier, 2014-03-01) Aragonés Beltrán, Pablo; Chaparro González, Fidel Vicente; Pastor Ferrando, Juan Pascual; Pla Rubio, Andrea; Dpto. de Proyectos de Ingeniería; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial; C.Inv.Dirección Proyectos,Innov.yS.PRINS; Universitat Politècnica de ValènciaIn this paper the AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) and the ANP (Analytic Network Process) are applied to help the managing board of an important Spanish solar power investment company to decide whether to invest in a particular solar-thermal power plant project and, if so, to determine the order of priority of the projects in the company's portfolio. Project management goes through a long process, from obtaining the required construction permits and authorizations, negotiating with different stakeholders, complying with complex legal regulations, to solving the technical problems associated with plant construction and distribution of the energy generated. The whole process involves high engineering costs. The decision approach proposed in this paper consists of three phases. In the first two phases, the managing board must decide whether to accept or reject a project according to a set of criteria previously identified by the technical team. The third phase consists of establishing a priority order among the projects that have proven to be economically profitable based on project risk levels and execution time delays. This work analyzes the criteria that should be taken into account to accept or reject proposals for investment, as well as the risks used to prioritize some projects over others.
- PublicationAn approach to Sustainability Risk Assessment in Industrial Assets(MDPI AG, 2021-06) García-Gómez, Fco. Javier; Rosales-Prieto, Víctor Fco.; Sánchez-Lite, Alberto; Fuentes Bargues, José Luis; González-Gaya, Cristina; Dpto. de Proyectos de Ingeniería; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial; C.Inv.Dirección Proyectos,Innov.yS.PRINS; Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia[EN] Asset management, as a global process through which value is added to a company, is a managerial model that involves major changes in strategies, technologies, and resources; risk management; and a change in the attitude of the people involved. The growing commitment of companies to sustainability results in them applying this approach to all their activities. For this reason, it is relevant to develop sustainability risk assessment procedures in industrial assets. This paper presents a methodological framework for the inclusion of sustainability aspects in the risk management of industrial assets. This approach presents a procedure to provide general criteria, methodology, and essential mandatory requirements to be adopted for the identification, analysis, and evaluation of sustainability aspects, impacts, and risks related to assets owned and managed by an industrial company. The proposed procedure is based on ISO 55,000 and ISO 31,000 standards and was developed following three steps: a preliminary study, identification of sustainability aspects and sustainability risks/opportunities, and impact assessment and residual risks management. Our results could serve as a model that facilitates the improvement of sustainability analysis risks in industrial assets and could be used as a basis for future developments in the application of the standards to optimize management of these assets.

- PublicationAn integrated method to calculate an automobile's emissions throughout its life cycle(Elsevier, 2015-04-01) Viñoles Cebolla, Rosario; Bastante Ceca, María José; Capuz Rizo, Salvador Fernando; Dpto. de Proyectos de Ingeniería; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial; C.Inv.Dirección Proyectos,Innov.yS.PRINS; Universitat Politècnica de València[EN] Although studies can be found in the literature that present emissions inventories associated with different types of automobiles, distinct technologies or various stages of their life cycles, they do not enable us to compare the environmental impact of the complete life cycle of two vehicles. This is because there is no valid emissions inventory for all types of automobiles that covers all the life cycle stages (the cradle to grave approach). This paper proposes a method to estimate the principal types of emissions throughout a vehicle's life cycle based on primary data (weight, year of manufacture, engine technology, fuel type used, etc.). The proposed method requires neither sophisticated life cycle assessment software nor knowledge of specific information on individual vehicles. The proposal has been validated by analyzing three different gasoline and diesel-fueled internal combustion engine vehicles and by considering a life span of 100,000 km.
