- PublicationA conceptual framework for multi-objective facility layout planning by a bottom-up approach(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2023-01-31) Pérez-Gosende, Pablo; Mula Bru, Josefa; Díaz-Madroñero Boluda, Francisco Manuel; Dpto. de Organización de Empresas; Centro de Investigación en Gestión e Ingeniería de Producción; Escuela Politécnica Superior de Alcoy; Generalitat Valenciana; European Commission[EN] The purpose of this paper is to present a conceptual framework to facilitate academics and practitioners decision making related to multi-objective facility layout planning (mFLP) by employing a bottom-up approach. Based on a literature survey framed in the mFLP context, this work identified and discussed a set of criteria that have become limitations of the traditional top-down approach. These criteria served as the basis to conceive the proposed conceptual framework. Our conceptual framework formalises FLP as a multi-objective problem by following the two traditional planning phases (block- and detailed phase) in reverse by a bottom-up approach, and by also integrating a third phase, called the refined phase, which has not previously been contemplated in the literature. Apart from identifying the inputs and outputs of each phase, the conceptual framework groups together several objectives related to mFLP that have been recently considered in the literature and formalises and contextualises them according to the planning phase in which they are involved. This is the first time that mFLP is addressed with a bottom-up approach.
- PublicationA Mathematical Programming Model for Tactical Planning with Set-up Continuity in a Two-stage Ceramic Firm(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2016-07-13) Pérez Perales, David; Alemany, M.M. Eva; Dpto. de Organización de Empresas; Centro de Investigación en Gestión e Ingeniería de Producción; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial[EN] It is known that capacity issues in tactical production plans in a hierarchical context are relevant since its inaccurate determination may lead to unrealistic or simply non-feasible plans at the operational level. Semi-continuous industrial processes, such as ceramic ones, often imply large setups and their consideration is crucial for accurate capacity estimation. However, in most of production planning models developed in a hierarchical context at this tactical (aggregated) level, setup changes are not explicitly considered. Their consideration includes not only decisions about lot sizing of production, but also allocation, known as Capacitated Lot Sizing and Loading Problem (CLSLP). However, CLSLP does not account for set-up continuity, specially important in contexts with lengthy and costly set-ups and where product families minimum run length are similar to planning periods. In this work, a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model for a two stage ceramic firm which accounts for lot sizing and loading decisions including minimum lot-sizes and set-up continuity between two consecutive periods is proposed. Set-up continuity inclusion is modelled just considering which product families are produced at the beginning and at the end of each period of time, and not the complete sequence. The model is solved over a simplified two-stage real-case within a Spanish ceramic firm. Obtained results confirm its validity.
- PublicationA MILP for multi-machine injection moulding sequencing in the scope of C2NET Project(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2018-01-31) Andrés Navarro, Beatriz; Sanchis, Raquel; Poler, Raúl; Díaz-Madroñedo, Manuel; Mula Bru, Josefa; Dpto. de Organización de Empresas; Centro de Investigación en Gestión e Ingeniería de Producción; Escuela Politécnica Superior de Alcoy; European Commission[EN] The goal of C2NET European H2020 Funded Project is the creation of cloud-enabled tools for supporting the SMEs supply network optimization of manufacturing and logistic assets based on collaborative demand, production and delivery plans. In the scope of C2NET Project, and particularly in the Optimisation module (C2NET OPT), this paper proposes a novel holistic mixed integer linear programing (MILP) model to optimise the injection sequencing in a multi-machine case. The results of the MILP will support the production planner decision-making process in the calculation of (i) moulds setup in certain machines, and (ii) the amount of products to produce in order to minimise the setup, inventory, and backorders costs. The designed MILP takes part of the algorithms repository created in C2NET European Funded Project to solve realistic industry planning problems. The MILP is verified in realistic data considering three data sets with different sizes, in order to test it’s the computation efficiency.

- PublicationAn industry maturity model for implementing Machine Learning operations in manufacturing(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2023-07-31) Mateo Casalí, Miguel Ángel; Fraile Gil, Francisco; Boza García, Andrés; Nazarenko, Artem; Dpto. de Organización de Empresas; Centro de Investigación en Gestión e Ingeniería de Producción; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Informática; European Commission[EN] The next evolutionary technological step in the industry presumes the automation of the elements found within a factory, which can be accomplished through the extensive introduction of automatons, computers and Internet of Things (IoT) components. All this seeks to streamline, improve, and increase production at the lowest possible cost and avoid any failure in the creation of the product, following a strategy called Zero Defect Manufacturing . Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) provide a ML-based solution to this challenge, promoting the automation of all product-relevant steps, from development to deployment. When integrating different machine learning models within manufacturing operations, it is necessary to understand what functionality is needed and what is expected. This article presents a maturity model that can help companies identify and map their current level of implementation of machine learning models.

- PublicationApplication of fuzzy logic in performance management: a literature review(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2014-07-11) Gurrea Montesinos, Verónica; Alfaro Saiz, Juan José; Rodríguez Rodríguez, Raúl; Verdecho Sáez, María José; Dpto. de Organización de Empresas; Centro de Investigación en Gestión e Ingeniería de Producción; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial[EN] Performance management has become in a key success factor for any organization. Traditionally, performance management has focused uniquely in financial measures, mainly using quantitative measures, but two decades ago they were extended towards an integral view of the organization, appearing qualitative measures. This type of extended view and associated measures have a degree of uncertainty that needs to be bounded. One of the essential tools for uncertainty bounding is the fuzzy logic and, therefore, the main objective of this paper is the analysis of the literature about the application of fuzzy logic in performance measurement systems operating within uncertainty environments with the aim of categorizing, conceptualizing and classifying the works written so far. Finally, three categories are defined according to the different uses of fuzzy logic within performance management concluding that the most important application of fuzzy logic that counts with a higher number of studies is uncertainty bounding.
- PublicationApplied mathematical modelling for Industrial Engineers(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2011-06-05) Mula Bru, Josefa; Poler, Raúl; Dpto. de Organización de Empresas; Centro de Investigación en Gestión e Ingeniería de Producción; Escuela Politécnica Superior de Alcoy[EN] The learning of mathematical modelling techniques can result in a long and tedious process for Industrial Organization Engineering students. It is necessary to combine in a balanced way the theoretical teachings with the modelling of real study cases. In order to make more flexible the theoretical teaching process, multimedia tools of autodidactic learning are provided. A key factor is to evolve from simple models solved through educational programs, such as WinQSB or spreadsheets with embedded solvers to more complex models developed with a high level language of mathematical programming as MPL or GAMS where the models are solved with diverse commercial solvers (CPLEX, GUROBI, XPRESS, etc.) The objective of this paper is to present an innovative methodology to teach mathematical modelling techniques based in: (i) the balance of the theoretical and practical teachings; (ii) the use of multimedia autodidactic tools; and (iii) the formulation and resolution of real study cases through different solvers.

- PublicationDiseño de itinerarios de aprendizaje para el desarrollo progresivo de la competencia transversal “Innovación, creatividad y emprendimiento”(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2018-09-26) Boza García, Andrés; Cuenca González, María Llanos; Fernández Diego, Marta; Ruiz Font, Leonor; Alarcón Valero, Faustino; Prats Montalbán, José Manuel; Alemany Díaz, María del Mar; Gordo Monzó, Mari Luz; Dpto. de Organización de Empresas; Instituto Universitario Mixto de Tecnología de Informática; Dpto. de Estadística e Investigación Operativa Aplicadas y Calidad; Centro de Investigación en Gestión e Ingeniería de Producción; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Informática; Grupo de Integración de Tecnologías de Información en las Organizaciones. ITIO; Grupo de Ingeniería Estadística Multivariante GIEM; Universitat Politècnica de València[EN] The level with which our students arrive with respect to a certain transversal competence is often unknown and initially presupposed by the teacher. The proposal for innovation and educational improvement presented in this document focuses on the early identification of this initial level in the transversal competence "Innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship" in order to offer learning activities at different levels to reinforce those aspects required for an adequate coverage of the competence. For the latter, it is proposed designing a map of classified learning activities. The desing of this map enables to have a broad view of the activities carried out for the development of competence, to identify overlaps of activities at the same level, and to identify levels not addressed by no activity, which encourages the development of activities that cover levels not reached by other activities.
- PublicationE-aplan: a tool for teaching collaborative aggregate production planning in industrial engineering(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-01-27) Poler Escoto, Raúl; Andrés Navarro, Beatriz; Guzmán Ortiz, Eduardo; Dpto. de Organización de Empresas; Centro de Investigación en Gestión e Ingeniería de Producción; Escuela Politécnica Superior de Alcoy; Generalitat Valenciana[EN] In this paper, we present a software tool entitled E-aplan Express (version 2018), with free access for educational and commercial use, to the modelling and resolution of aggregate production plans generating medium-long term production planning, based on a forecasted demand in that period. E-aplan tool models the aggregate production plan though a mixed integer linear programming model (MILP). The LP solver optimization engine generates the planning by adjusting all the optimization variables with the least possible error. Finally, it is presented an illustrative example that considers a collaborative aggregate production planning, in a two-echelon supply chain. Different scenarios are modelled in order to simultaneously consider the planning objectives of both enterprises of the network.
- PublicationUn enfoque diferente para la resolución de problemas(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2016-07-19) Pérez Bernabeu, Elena; Sellés Cantó, Miguel Ángel; Gisbert Soler, Víctor; Sánchez Caballero, Samuel; Dpto. de Estadística e Investigación Operativa Aplicadas y Calidad; Dpto. de Ingeniería Mecánica y de Materiales; Instituto de Diseño para la Fabricación y Producción Automatizada; Centro de Investigación en Gestión e Ingeniería de Producción; Instituto de Tecnología de Materiales; Escuela Politécnica Superior de Alcoy[EN] When solving problems skills are involved in some specific courses, it turns out fundamental that students develop the ability of understanding the assignment texts. We have realized that students, in general, have a lack in the comprehension of texts, particularly of problem texts. In our case, we have made a proposal using a methodology for students who attend statistics topic courses in engineering degrees, so that it makes easier for them to do a critical reading of the assignments, but bearing in mind that the aim of the course is not that they learn "to read" but statistics. It was offered as a voluntary activity including the incentive that they would be able to gain an additional mark so that it could be posible to increase the final grade obtained by usual ways. The students response was considered positive, so the experience is going to be replicated in following academic years. In addition, we implemented other innovative methodologies so as to promote generic competencies as oral and written communication skillsin the own language, as well as in another foreign language (in this case, the English language).
- PublicationExperiencia de intercambio de liderazgo en dos trabajos en equipo(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2016-07-19) Boza García, Andrés; Cuenca González, María Llanos; Dpto. de Organización de Empresas; Centro de Investigación en Gestión e Ingeniería de Producción; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Informática[EN] An important aspect of team building is the heterogeneity of its members to enrich the discussion and take on different roles. However, it is not always possible to select teammates and each member has to adapt to his or her group. The aim is to move the student out of its "comfort zone" so it has to assume different roles. This communication presents the results of an experience of teamworks which were formed by pairs of students. The leadership role had to be exchanged in the development of two collaborative works. The experience has revealed that students perceive that their contributions to the partner (leader) are greater than those received when he or she has the leader role. In addition, students assess in a positive way the method followed according with its personal experience, however, this does not happen when they assess from an general perspective. They prefer the traditional method, sharing the implication in the work equally and leaderless teamworks which is understandable for their resistance to change and for assuming roles perhaps not previously assumed.
- PublicationFulfillment costs in online grocery retailing: comparing retail store and warehouse strategies(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2023-07-31) Rodríguez-García, Miguel; Ortiz Bas, Ángel; Prado-Prado, José Carlos; Lyons, Andrew; Dpto. de Organización de Empresas; Centro de Investigación en Gestión e Ingeniería de Producción; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial[EN] This study develops a framework that structures the operational costs of online grocery retailing in order to identify which is the most suitable e-fulfillment strategy. The cost framework was designed by applying time-driven activity-based costing (TDABC) and is based on the insights of two large European grocery retailers, which operate retail store and warehouse e-fulfillment strategies respectively. Cost information was collected, and activity-oriented process modeling was carried out in the field to identify the most relevant e-fulfillment cost drivers. For the retail store strategy, picking costs were the highest among e-fulfillment activities and up to twice as high as for the warehouse strategy. For the warehouse strategy, delivery costs were the highest and 50% higher than for the retail store strategy. Less studied logistics activities such as unpacking and reverse logistics all together accounted for up to one third of total expenses for both strategies. In omnichannel, operations and logistics managers must still ensure the profitability of the online channel if they want to succeed in the grocery business. This framework will help managers identify and estimate the most relevant cost drivers, and to allocate them to the main operational activities.
