- Publication2D strain rate and ground deformation modelling from continuous and survey mode GNSS data in El Hierro, Canary Islands(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2023-01-27) Arnoso, José; Riccardi, Umberto; Tammaro, Umberto; Benavent, Maite; Montesinos, Fuensanta; Vélez, Emilio; Agencia Estatal de Investigación[EN] We present a study of the deformation pattern in El Hierro Island through the analysis of GNSS data from surveys carried out between 2015 and 2019 as well as continuous data. The last eruption in El Hierro occurred under the sea on the south rift, lasted from October 2011 to March 2012, and it was preceded by intense seismic activity and nearly 5 cm ground inflation. After this eruptive cycle, further magmatic intrusions were detected, from June 2012 to March 2014, associated to intense seismic swarms and inflation (about 22 cm of uplift). Nevertheless, these magmatic intrusions did not culminate in any eruption. Following these post-eruptive episodes, the seismic activity became less intense. Thus, for the period of this study, about 500 earthquakes with magnitude ranging from mbLG 2 to mbLG 3.9 were recorded, the ground deformation measured is of lower magnitude, still remaining a slight uplift trend in the GNSS stations up to 2017 and followed by a slight subsidence of about 1.5 cm between 2017-2019. Our purpose is to explain the ground displacements measured and the earthquake occurrence in terms of geodynamics and seismotectonic activity along the island, for the period 2015-2019. Firstly, we retrieved the geodetic velocities from the GNSS daily solutions. Secondly, we computed the 2D infinitesimal strain rates from the velocities through a triangular segmentation approach to map the deformation pattern along the respective GNSS surveys.
- PublicationA contemporary approach to the graphic representation of the urban experience(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2023-10-31) Vicente Gilabert, Cristina; López Sánchez, Marina; Linares Gómez del Pulgar, Mercedes; Agencia Estatal de Investigación; Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación[EN] In the complex field of urban phenomenon analysis and representation, this text addresses the evolution of works specifically dedicated to investigating the relationships established between individuals and the city. It focuses its attention on one of the less studied aspects: the cartographic representation of subjective, emotional, and perceptual aspects related to the experience of navigating and inhabiting an urban space. The city cannot be considered as a neutral or objective space; on the contrary, there will always be an imaginary construct that shapes and accompanies it. This imaginary construct, which determines our way of perceiving, being, and moving within the city, is fundamental for a comprehensive understanding of urban processes and dynamics. Approaching this dialectical relationship between the physical and subjective dimensions of the city, which is intangible in itself, through analysis and graphic representation is now possible thanks to theoretical and, above all, technological advancements. The objective of this text is to contextualize this process by presenting two frames of reference: one conceptual, linked to the evolution of the term landscape, and another methodological, focused on presenting the technical advancements that have been decisive in the evolution of this type of representation. We take a journey through cartographic experiences initiated in the 1960s and arrive at some of the most innovative research lines in this field, such as Biomapping, real-time cartographies, or intelligent cartographies. The aim of the article is to reinforce and emphasize the utility of graphic expression as a tool for urban and territorial decision-making, highlighting its capacity to represent even the most sensitive and complex data. Through a panoramic view of the advancements achieved in recent decades regarding these types of cartographies, it illustrates the interesting convergence that can be delineated today between the traditionally connected areas of graphic expression in Architecture and Urbanism and the new scenarios of data management and analysis.
- PublicationA hint of the summery goodness of green grass: a look at English descriptors in tasting notes(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2024-07-08) López Arroyo, Belén; Sanz-Valdivieso, Lucia; Agencia Estatal de Investigación; Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación; Universidad de Valladolid; Ministerio de Educación y Formación Profesional[EN] Tasting descriptors, which are common terms used to describe a food product, play a significant role in tasting discourse and particularly in tasting notes. Although they have been the subject of a number of studies from different perspectives, none of them describe and classify descriptors from their form, function and combination in tasting notes in English. In this paper, we examine a corpus of tasting notes with the aim of 1. determining the positioning of English descriptors in relation to the keywords designating the tasting process; 2. scoping the depth of description, as indicated by the number of descriptors; 3. identifying if the descriptors are specific to a given aspect of the food product or are generic enough to be used to describe different aspects of it.; and 4. categorizing frequent semantic associative processed among descriptors and keywords. Our results will be a valuable resource for professionals, technical writers and students tasters in English.
- PublicationA Knowledge-Based Model for Polarity Shifters(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2022-11-23) Blázquez-López, Yolanda; Agencia Estatal de Investigación; European Commission[EN] Polarity shifting can be considered one of the most challenging problems in the context of Sentiment Analysis. Polarity shifters, also known as contextual valence shifters (Polanyi and Zaenen 2004), are treated as linguistic contextual items that can increase, reduce or neutralise the prior polarity of a word called focus included in an opinion. The automatic detection of such items enhances the performance and accuracy of computational systems for opinion mining, but this challenge remains open, mainly for languages other than English. From a symbolic approach, we aim to advance in the automatic processing of the polarity shifters that affect the opinions expressed on tweets, both in English and Spanish. To this end, we describe a novel knowledge-based model to deal with three dimensions of contextual shifters: negation, quantification, and modality (or irrealis).
[EN] In the literature, different dynamic models of the railway wheel have been developed to predict its sound radiation; however, there are still certain aspects that can be improved. Specifically, the high computational cost of these models, either because they solve the fluidstructure interaction or because they solve the dynamics and acoustics of the three-dimensional wheel, makes it difficult to carry out numerous simulations with the aim of achieving quieter designs. In the present work, a vibroacoustic model of the stationary wheel is developed through an axisymmetric approach, yielding an efficient and comprehensive acoustic prediction tool. The calculation methodology consists of, firstly, adopting an axisymmetric approach to solve the vibratory dynamics of the wheel from its cross-section, using finite element techniques; subsequently, the acoustic radiation of the three-dimensional wheel is calculated from the dynamics of the aforementioned section through an analytical formulation. Finally, the vibroacoustic model developed is validated via comparison with commercial software that solves the fluid-structure interaction, showing the aforementioned computational advantages that the former has over the latter.
- PublicationAbandon and reuse - The engineered space at a time of pandemics(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2022-06-29) García-Esparza, Juan Antonio; Agencia Estatal de Investigación[EN] This paper critically explores the evaluation of Historic Centres (HC) to establish new perspectives for the management of their values and attributes. The unconventional interpretation of these HC relies on therevision of the UNESCO Operational Guidelines to achieve new approaches to the cultural diversity of these spaces. A methodological approach based on interviews and open data cross-referencing aims to integrate the social and cultural aspects of the World Heritage cities (WH) in Spain. The research analyses the eventual cultural, architectural and social stratification as elements that need updating to manage HC. Therefore, this research addresses narrative interpretations, both of inhabitants and visitors, as forms of behaviour, expressions and adaptations that result in idiosyncratic innovation and experimentation in the urban fabric. The research steams from a series of scientific contributions to the research projects Writing Urban Places, COST Action 18126, and Dynamics of placemaking, COST Action 18204, (2019-2023). Through a mixed methodology of qualitative and quantitative data analysis, the research aims to analyse the interdependenciesbetween physical conservation, social awareness and sustainable development of some WH areas in Spain.Data is analysed by means of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to spatially comprehend the engineeredspace in medium-sized heritage cities.
- PublicationAccessible C-programming course from scratch using a MOOC platform without limitations(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2018-07-02T13:21:15Z) Castelló, Adrián; Iserte, Sergio; Belloch, Jose Antonio; Agencia Estatal de Investigación[EN] The C language has been used for ages in the application development in multidisciplinary environments. However, in the academia, this language is being replaced by other higher-level languages due to they are easier to understand, learn and apply. Moreover, the necessity of professionals with a good knowledge in those high-level languages is constantly increasing because of the boosting of mobile devices. This scenario generates a lack of low-level language programmers, required in other less trendy fields, but equal or more important, such as science, engineering or research. In order to revive the interest in low-level languages and provide those minority fields with well-prepared staff, we present in this work a MOCC C-programming course that is addressed to any kind of people with or without IT background. A feature that differentiates this course from others programming online-based courses is that we mainly focus on the C language syntax providing, via a self-tuned virtual machine, an encapsulated environment that hides any interaction with the command-line of the underlying operating system. A secondary target of this work is to foster the computer science degree students to enrol the computer architecture specialization at the Universitat Jaume I (Spain). For this purpose, the High Performance Computing and Architectures research group of that University has decided to use this C course as a tool for fulfill the gap of the current syllabus. The results show that half of the participants that completed the first session of the course have satisfactorily finished the course, and the number of computer science degree students that chose the computer architecture specialization the following academic course was increment by 3x.
- PublicationAlimentos del futuro: la ciencia ficción culinaria a través del arte(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2022-03-04) Ramón Fernández, Francisca; Lull Noguera, Cristina; Soriano Soto, Desamparados; Dpto. de Urbanismo; Instituto Universitario de Ingeniería del Agua y del Medio Ambiente; Dpto. de Química; Escuela Politécnica Superior de Gandia; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Agronómica y del Medio Natural; Agencia Estatal de Investigación[EN] The proposal related to the study of different works of art is presented in which the socalled “futuristic food” is reflected. After the publication in 1930 of the Manifesto of Futurist Cooking, in which a gastronomic revolution began with the appearance of dishes such as “Pollo Fiat”, “Carneplástico”, or sensory experiences such as “Aeroabanquete”, there are numerous occasions in which the avant-garde in gastronomy has been reflected in an artistic work, mainly in painting. Based on this consideration we will analyze from different points of view such well-known works as Campbell’s soup cans, by Andy Warhol; Nedick’s, 1970, by Richard Estes, Floor Burger, by Claes Oldenburg; Cakes, by Wayne Thibaud; Ham and egg sandwich, Tjalf Sparnaay, or Figure with meat, by Francis Bacon. From the aforementioned analysis, valid conclusions have been obtained regarding the use of food in the pictorial work, and its social connotation and sensitive perspective, in addition to its influence on the time in which it is located.
- PublicationAn energy transition without externalization?(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2023-09-22) Caballeros-Finkelstein, Alejandro; Ramos-Martín, Jesús; Madrid-López, Cristina; Agencia Estatal de Investigación[EN] The extended abstract presents the first results of the estimation of externalization levels of Spain through its energy transition towards 2030. . It represents a first step towards building the Calliope Spain model adapted from EuroCalliope. This first portion of the work presents the trade emissions balance for Spain for 2010 and 2015 using an Input-Output methodology. The results position Spain as a “net exporter” of emissions given that the country imports more goods and services than it exports. These insights serve as baselines to establish the country´s total internal and externalized emissions by trade partner as will be used in Calliope Spain. By examining these trends, it is possible to gain valuable insights into the correlation between international trade and greenhouse gas emissions in Spain's energy sector. This first analysis concludes with recommendations for policy.
- PublicationAn estimate of the Italian Consumer Confidence Index at regional level using Google Trends data(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2023-09-22) Doménech I de Soria, Josep; Marletta, Andrea; Facultad de Administración y Dirección de Empresas; Dpto. de Economía y Ciencias Sociales; Grupo de Investigación de Economía Internacional y Desarrollo; Agencia Estatal de Investigación[EN] Data about consumer confidence indices are often used as a gauge of the entire economy of a country. In Italy, this information is collected by Istat and it is available at national level and at the first sub-level, the geographic area, but not at the regional level. Previous research has demonstrated that the volume of some Google searches are correlated with the consumer confidence. Since Google Trends data are available both at national and regional level, the aim of this paper is to explore they can be combined with the data offered by Istat to obtain an estimate for consumer confidence indices at the second sub-level, i.e., the regional area. To this end, a set of search topics and words have been selected as potential predictors to acquire more information about consumer confidence indices for 20 Italian regions from 2007 to 2022. The obtained regional estimates are in line with the geographic area being successful to identify the periods of economic crisis due to the 2008 financial crisis and the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic.
- PublicationAnálisis comparativo de software para obtener MDT con fotogrametría RPAS(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-10-01) Arevalo Verjel, Alba Nely; Lerma García, José Luis; Fernández, José; Dpto. de Ingeniería Cartográfica Geodesia y Fotogrametría; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Geodésica, Cartográfica y Topográfica; Agencia Estatal de Investigación[EN] RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems) are widely used in photogrammetry for taking images due to their high spatial resolution and speed of response, being able to reach areas of difficult access, being important to design a good procedure in the field to minimize errors in data collection. It is recommended to use ground control points (GCP) using conventional RPAS, when they do not work with RTK (Real Time Kinematic) systems. Likewise, there are free and licensed photogrammetric programs on the market to generate digital surface models (DSM), terrain models (DTM) and orthophotomosaics. In this article, two photogrammetric programs are used to process images captured with RPAS, such as Agisoft Metashape and Recap Photo, using GCP and check points. The study was carried out in Almenara (Spain) where the topographic survey was carried out with RPAS, capturing 100 digital images, in an area of 0.38 km2. 6 GCP were used in order to orient the digital images well in the local coordinate system and to properly georeference the images obtained during the flight. To obtain the MDT, the CloudCompare software was used to filter the cloud of points obtained from both software. The results show a difference in height between the two DTMs of less than 28 cm, taking as a reference the DTM of the Agisoft Metashape point cloud and regarding the error in the check points, Recap Photo presented a greater error.
[EN] Excessive energy consumption is currently a big deal for society. Part of the solution to this problem is to improve the efficiency of extensive use systems, particularly thermal systems. One way to address this is through the building of energy improvement oriented models. These models depend on a priori unknown parameters that must be estimated. In this sense, identifiability is an essential property to be analyzed in any parametric estimation process. In this paper, we present a lumped-parameter model of a thermal system. Then, we analyze its identifiability using the local isomorphism theorem. Finally, we discuss two scenarios depending on the measured variables. In the first one we have measurements of the complete state and we show that the model is identifiable, while in the second one we have partial measurements and the model turns out to be non-identiafiable. Finally, we propose an additional analysis in which we determine the minimum set of variables to be measured for the model to be identifiable.
- PublicationAnálisis de rendimiento del rechazo de perturbaciones en controladores cuadráticos lineales: un método práctico de sintonía adaptativo(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2023-11-08) Pataro, Igor M. L.; D. Gil, Juan; Guzmán, José L.; M. Lemos, João; Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación; Agencia Estatal de Investigación; Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, Portugal; Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico, Brasil[EN] This paper proposes an adaptive tuning method for the Linear-Quadratic FeedForward (LQ-FF) optimal controller. The procedure aims to reject disturbances while maintaining the reference tracking performance of the conventional LQ controller. The adaptive mechanism is formulated by analyzing each element of the control signal LQ-FF concerning state regulation, reference change, and disturbance compensation. The disturbance rejection mechanism is based on the classical strategy used in Proportional-IntegralDerivative controllers and the theoretical analysis studied in previous works for predictive controllers, which aim to obtain the inverse dynamics of the disturbances and process inputs in relation to the outputs. In addition, a comparison is presented between an augmented state space model and a model with a polynomial delay approximation for treating delays associated with disturbances and process inputs in the controller formulation. The proposed method effectively controls a validated nonlinear temperature system, maintaining performance equivalent to the conventional LQ controller for reference tracking while entirely rejecting disturbance effects. The proposed tuning achieves 10 % less output error, with an increase of only 18 % in the control effort compared to conventional tuning in simulations.
[EN] Due the lack of accurate experimental data to develop and validate surface urban wash-off and sediment transport models, this study presents an extensive experimental campaign in which the variables involved in wash-off and sediment transport processes are precisely measured in a 1:1 scale urban drainage physical model of 36 m2. In these experiments, different sediment granulometries and rain intensities were tested measuring surface and in-pipe water depths; surface velocities using imaging techniques; flow discharges, total suspended solids concentrations and particle size distributions at the entrance of the gully pots and at the pipe system outlet; and performing mass balances with the sediment that remains deposited at the end of the experiments in the different parts of the model. Raw and processed data obtained is openly available in Zenodo repository (https://zenodo.org/communities/washtreet).
[EN] Free falling jet is one of the most common energy dissipation methods used in the overtopping of dams. This work presents the time and frequency analysis of pressure measurements obtained at the bottom of a plunge pool downstream of free falling jets in an experimental facility. A relative large device (falling height up to 2.85 m and impingement jet velocities between 5.3 and 7.6 m/s) has been used in the study. The behavior of the four types of free falling jets classified in previous studies has been analyzed in the time and the frequency domains. The study focuses on the pressure on the stagnation point. The pressure distributions near the stagnation point have been also analyzed. Finally, the results have been compared with the frequencies behavior for circular and rectangular jets available in the literature.
- PublicationAnálisis y diseño de sistemas lineales con parámetros variantes utilizando LMIs(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2018-12-13) Rotondo, Damiano; Sánchez, Helem S.; Nejjari, Fatiha; Puig, Vicenç; Agencia Estatal de Investigación; Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad[EN] This paper presents a tutorial on analysis and design of linear parameter varying (LPV) systems using linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Several specifications, such as D-stability, guaranteed H∞ performance and guaranteed quadratic cost, as well as different control structures, such as state-feedback control, output-feedback control and observer-based control, are considered. A numerical example and a simplified model of a two-degrees-of-freedom helicopter (TRMS) are used to illustrate in a didactic manner the overall design methodology using LMIs.
- PublicationAnalysis of the effectiveness of measures to reduce the severity of traffic accidents in the city of Barcelona in the period 2013-2019(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2023-09-22) Bermúdez, Lluís; Morillo, Isabel; Agencia Estatal de Investigación; Generalitat de Catalunya[EN] We study the severity of traffic accidents in the city of Barcelona during the period from 2010 to 2019. We intend to measure the performance of Local Road Safety Plan in Barcelona 2013-2018 actions in reducing fatal/ seriously injured victims, throughout the whole period examined. We also analyse the effect of the risk factors on accident severity to detect which are significant and therefore on which the following measures can be focused to reduce severity. We draw on data available on the Open Data Barcelona platform. Logistic regression model is applied. The results show that the 2013-2016 period presents a lower risk of fatal/serious injuries with a reduction of the severity odds ratio in 10%. This lower risk is even greater in the 2017-2019 period, with a reduction of 18%. In general terms would confirm that the measures have had an effect. Furthermore, it can be observed that there has been a reduction in severe accidents on working days, as well as on the day shift and on normal streets. On the other hand, the incidence of severe accidents has remained the same when two-wheeled or heavy vehicles are involved and when there is speeding, a run-over or a shock.
- PublicationAnalysis Of The Influence Of The Ballast Track In The Dynamic Behaviour Of Single-Track Railway Bridges Of Different Typologies(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2022-05-11) Chordà Monsonís, Josep; Martínez Rodrigo, Mª Dolores; Galvín Barrera, Pedro; Romero Ordóñez, Antonio; Moliner Cabedo, Emmanuela; Junta de Andalucía; Universidad de Sevilla; Agencia Estatal de Investigación; Generalitat Valenciana[EN] Short-to-medium span simply-supported (SS) railway bridges are prone to experience high levels of vertical acceleration due to train passage. The necessity of predicting accurately their dynamic behaviour for design, safety and maintenance reasons, requires a deep understanding of the train induced vibrations in these structures. A key factor of this phenomenon is the influence exerted by the ballast track on their dynamic response. This paper provides a detailed sensitivity analysis over a single-track bridge catalogue covering lengths of interest from 10 to 25 m considering two different typologies, (i) girder-deck bridges and (ii) slab-deck bridges. The effect of the vertical flexibility of elastic bearings is also analysed. A 2D Finite-Element (FE) track-bridge interaction model is implemented with the aim to evaluate the influence of the track parameters on the modal properties of the bridges and the dynamic response under train passages. The results obtained reveal the influence of the ballast shear stiffness and damping in the dynamic behaviour of the structures, especially in the case of the shortest girder bridges.
